Wisconsin License Codes

Each license issued is comprised of three codes: 1) License type; 2) Position or level; and 3) Subject code.

1) The type code designates key characteristics of the license - the title, length and renewal requirements.

2) The position or level code describes what position the educator can hold or if teaching, the grade or developmental level the educator can teach.

3) The subject code, used only for teaching licenses, describes what subject the educator can teach within the grade range of his or her license.

08 / Life License / This license becomes invalid should the holder remain out of the profession for five or more years. The holder may revalidate this license by completing six semester credits of refresher work or a Professional Development Plan.
09 / Emergency Permit / The district may request renewal of this permit if there continues to be a shortage of licensed candidates and if the holder completes at least six semester credits or the equivalent in an approved program leading to a license in this area by August 31 of the year this permit expires.
10 / Emergency License / The district may request renewal of this license if the holder has completed six semester credits or the equivalent in an approved program leading to a license in this area by August 31 of the year this license expires.
