PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF WAMD
COMMUNICATION
WAMD serves as a forum in which medical directors can share ideas and discuss issues pertinent to their roles as Medical Directors.
EDUCATION
WAMD presents educational seminars that stress subjects important in nursing home care. We are an ACCME accredited organization and our Fall educational meetings can offer AMA PRA Category I credit hours in addition to qualifying for credit toward the CMD certificate and/or CME certificate renewal.
LIAISON
WAMD maintains communication with several nursing home associations, the Wisconsin Medical Society,
and the Department of Health Services to offer our input in their decision-making.
What is the Purpose of WAMD?
1.To promote better communication between physicians who provide care in a nursing home setting.
2.To promote better communication between medical directors and a) other nursing home professionals,
b) various nursing home associations, c) officials of government agencies.
3.To promote both quality and compassionate care for nursing home residents.
4.To conduct continuing education programs, emphasizing the area of geriatrics and long-term care.
5.To facilitate medical directors and other physicians in defining their roles.
6.To help determine equitable compensation for nursing home services.
7.To promote a better understanding by the lay public of issues concerning nursing home care.
8.To serve as conduit between the American Medical Directors Association and the WAMD.
What is the structure of WAMD?
The general membership of WAMD consists of physicians actively employed in Wisconsin as medical directors of long-term care facilities, as well as those physicians, advanced practice nurses and physicians’ assistants interested in LTC. Other licensed professionals interested in the problems of medical care in long-term care facilities may become associate members.
The organization is governed by a board of directors elected by the general membership at the annual meeting. The board meets, at least quarterly, to discuss current issues. It is responsible for the newsletter and the presentation of fall educational seminars.
Why is Joining WAMD
Important?
There is a growing commitment, both inside and outside the medical profession, to improve care in long term care (LTC) facilities. By joining WAMD, you will have an active, responsive way in which to discuss relevant issues with peers as well as formulate solutions to problems. By attending our educational seminars focusing on LTC, you can also receive CME credits while obtaining important information and education pertaining to all Wisconsin facilities.
At both the state level through WAMD, and the federal level through the American Medical Directors Association, we hope to offer input into the regulation of care in LTC facilities. Your membership in both these organizations will help to increase both their size and influence.
