A Brief Overview of Each Workshop:

Dr. James Partington’s 2-day Workshop: This workshop will review critical components for establishing and providing effective language-based behavioral interventions within classrooms. A review of issues related to, and specific recommendations for staff training, classroom structure and schedule, curriculum development, small group instructional strategies, skill acquisition tracking, and behavioral consultation will be provided.

This workshop is also designed to help those who work with children with autism to identify how the training of a variety of language skills (based upon Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior), can be incorporated into these daily activities. A brief review of Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior will be provided.

This workshop specifically addresses practical issues and will give methods for analyzing problem situations and developing strategies to solve them. We will introduce and define many principles, strategies, and techniques used at Behavior Analysts, Inc. and STARS School. It is designed for all educators, parents and therapists who interact with the child on a daily basis. We will demonstrate how you can use effective behavioral language teaching techniques throughout your child’s day. We will also identify the behavioral barriers that prevent your child from engaging in everyday family and school activities.

Dr. Brian Iwata’s 2-day Workshop: The most significant advancement in the assessment of severe behavior disorders over the past 20 years has been the development of functional analysis methodology. This approach has been mandated in a number of federal standards, state guidelines, court decisions, and most recently in IDEA amendments of 1997. Extensive research has shown that functional analysis is invaluable in guiding decisions about treatment selection and can produce clinically significant outcomes without the necessity of using punishment procedures.

Dr. Brian Iwata is the field’s foremost researcher on functional analysis methodology. In this workshop, he will provide a comprehensive review of all the currently used techniques and will illustrate the assessment-treatment continuum with extensive use of handouts and case examples. The emphasis will be on translating research findings into practical application.

Dr. Carbone’s 3-day Workshop:This workshop focuses on the behavioral approach to teaching communication skills to children with autism and other developmental disabilities. This approach is based on B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior and the research of Michael, Sundberg, Partington, and others. Participants in this workshop learn (1) to conduct a Behavioral Language Assessment, (2) to select the most appropriate form of communication for a child (vocal, signing, pointing to or exchanging pictures, or activating an augmentative device), and (3) to select the communication responses and supporting skills that should be taught first.

The workshop includes the recommended teaching procedures for those children who have no formal communication skills to those that are near conversational speakers. The presenter also describes and demonstrates errorless teaching, specific quick-transfer (prompting and fading) procedures, and the use of both discrete trial training in the natural environment and during intensive teaching session. Many videotape demonstrations are provided to illustrate the methods to increase spontaneous language and to develop conversational skills.
