Ms. Turpin, our school counselor, works with students, teachers, parents and the community to promote a positive school atmosphere. Ms. Turpin serves students by visiting with classes on a regular basis for group guidance lessons as well as leading small groups on topics such as self-esteem, anger management, making friends and social and emotional learning. Ms. Turpinis also available to meet with individual students as needed. Students can be referred to the counselor by teachers or parents, or a student in need can simply request to see the counselor.

Music

Ms. Daniels, is our new music teacher. In music class, students in grades K-5 will learn a variety of rhythms and notes while exploring music through singing, instrument playing, and dancing. Each day in music, we will sing, dance and play a musical game. Instruments are played every other week. Students in grades 4-5 are encouraged to join after school choir each Tuesday from 3-4. Every student in music class will perform in a grade level concert at some point throughout the year (dates listed on the calendar).

Physical Education

When students attend P.E., it is beneficial for students to wear tennis shoes and proper dress attire. Coach Hudson uses CATCH lessons in collaboration with Manor ISD curriculum to engage all students. All students in grades K-5 will engage in high-level, grade specific physical activity where they are challenged mentally, physically, and emotionally. Families are encouraged to provide students the opportunity of 30-60 min of physical activity each day at home. The goal is to influence our students to become lifelong fitness and health learners.

Art

Mr. Walton is our Art Teacher, students will learn how to find inspiration to create student-designed projects. Students will have the opportunity to learn the following: Drawing, Painting, 3-D, Mixed Media, Textiles, and Research. As the year progresses, student art will be on display in the hallways. You will be amazed at the variety and ingenuity of the projects being produced in our Art class!

Library

In the library, students in grades K-5 check out books every week. After the class is finished checking out new books, students do activities related to library skillsand participate in station activities that support instruction in the classroom.

Report Card Dates 2017-2018

October 27, January 12, March 23, May 25

Progress reports will be sent home after every 3rd week of the nine week period. All students will receive one. This allows you to see how your child is progressing during the current reporting period. Please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher if you are concerned about progress reports. It is very important that you do this right away and do not wait until the end of the nine weeks, as your child will not have time to improve their grade.

SCHOOL PROCEDURES/POLICIES

Dress Code

Manor ISD takes pride in the appearance of its students. The district’s dress code and grooming standards have been established to teach grooming and hygiene, to prevent disruption, and to minimize safety hazards at school or school-related functions. All students shall wear clothing that is neat, appropriate, and modest to the gender of the student.

The school campus, not unlike a work place, promotes a productive, business like atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Students should familiarize themselves with these standards, as popular fashion may be inconsistent with Manor ISD Guidelines. Please see the MISD Student Dress Code on the Manor ISD Website.

Electronic Devices

For safety purposes, the district permits students to possess cell phones; however, cell phones must remain in your child’s backpack during the entire instructional day. If they are out or in use anytime during the school day, they may be collected by a teacher or principal. The first time a phone is collected it may be given back to the student at the end of the day, the second time it will need to be collected by the parent, a third time collected the cell phone will be given to the principal and the principal will determine whether to return the cell phone to student at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the cell phone. Students are not permitted to possess such items as cd players, iPods, games,or cameras at school without prior permission from the teacher or principal.

Birthdays

Birthdays are a special time for our students. Birthdays are announced daily and students are invited to the office for a pencil. Parents may provide a birthday treat for their child’s classroom (cupcakes, cookies, etc.) such treats will be distributed at the end of the school day. In order to maintain the instructional integrity of the classroom, there will be no birthday parties in the classroom. Balloons, flowers and other gifts will not be permitted in the classrooms. In an effort to avoid hurt feelings students are allowed to pass out birthday invitations at school only if all classmates are invited, invitations will be passed out at the end of the day.

Toys

Toys are not allowed at school, toys will be collected by the teacher the first time and given back at the end of the day. The second time a toy is collected it will be given to an administrator.

Absences/Tardies

School attendance and promptness is vital to a student’s success in school. Students are expected to be at school each day unless they are ill, have some type of emergency, or have medical/dental appointments. Students who miss more than 18 days of school can by state law be considered for retention even if the absences are for illness.Students who have unexcusedabsences in the amount of 10 days per 6 months or 18 days per year will be referred to a truancy officer. If your child is absent from school please send a note to the teacher stating the reason for the absence.

Students who enter the building after 7:30are considered tardy and will need to stop in the office for a tardy slip. Those students who are tardy three or more times will not be considered for perfect attendance awards. Students with excessive tardies can be referred to a truancy officer.

If you have questions about tardies or attendance you may contact the school Student Records Specialist, Ms. Elma Hernandez.

Breakfast/Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are served daily. Student menus will go home at the beginning of each month. Menus are also posted on the district web site ( Students may bring their lunch daily or purchase lunch. Students may also bring their lunch and purchase milk only. The menu prices are as follows:

Breakfast is FREE for all Students

$2.25 – Breakfast for staff and visitors

$2.35 – Student Lunch

$0.40 – Reduced Lunch

$3.50 – Lunch for staff and visitors

Students who purchase lunch will have a lunch account set up for them. Any lunch money sent to school will be noted in this account. We ask that parents please send cash or checks (payable to Manor ISD) in an envelope clearly marked “Lunch Money” with the child’s name, grade, and the amount enclosed. Students are assigned an ID number that is then used daily to purchase items.

Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child at any time. Parents and their child are welcome to sit at the guest table. In order to avoid hurt feelings please do not allow your child to invite other students to eat with them, instead we ask that you allow this to be a special time for you and your child.

The district offers a free/reduced lunch program. Applications can be found on the MISD website. Parents who qualify for this program are encouraged to apply even if they want their child to bring their lunch to school. Federal funds are given to schools depending on their number of free and reduced students. This information remains strictly confidential.

Please remember to properly identify the reason for sending money to school. This will help teachers and office personnel to properly deliver the funds.

Snacks

Snacks in the classroom are left up to the teacher’s discretion. The teacher will determine the most appropriate time for a healthy snack and will communicate this information with parents.

Checking Students Out During the School Day

Parents who need to withdraw a student early from school will need to come to the office to sign their child out. Students will not be called to the office until the parent is on campus in the office. Office personnel will ask for an ID and will make sure that the person checking the child out has permission on the child’s locator card. Teachers will not release students from the classroom until they have been properly checked out of the office. This procedure is put in place to keep our students safe.

.Health Status of Student: A student will be sent home for a health need if he/she:

Appears ill and is unable to do class work.

Is suspected of having a contagious disease/condition.

Sustains a head injury which needs medical attention or close observation.

Any child returning to school after having a contagious condition (i.e. strep throat, pink eye, flu, chicken pox) should:

Be free of acute illness symptoms.

Have a temperature below 100.4 degrees F for 24 hours without fever reducingmedication, or with a doctor's statement that the student may return to class.

In the case of Chicken Pox, all lesions must be scabbed over which usually takes about 7 days.

Conferencing with Teachers

Parents are encouraged to conference with their child’s teacher first whenever they have a question or concern. Campus administrators are more than happy to conference with parents about issues or concerns once the parent has made contact with the teacher. Parents may call teachers during their conference period or leave a voice mail and the teacher will call back. Please be mindful that if you call a teacher after her conference period on a given day that she may not get the message until after school is out. Teachers will make every effort to call parents back the same day. Please make arrangements to schedule your conferences with your child’s teacher rather than “stopping by” as teachers are sometimes unable to visit with you immediately.

Visiting Campus

In an effort to monitor visitors in the building all doors except the front door closest to the office are kept locked from the outside, during the school day. All visitors are required to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge.

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Students Who Walk/Ride Bikes to School

Students who walk or ride their bike to school will be assisted across the street by a city crossing guard. Bikes must bewalked once they are on school property. Bike locks are encouraged for those students that bring a bike. Students who ride bikes home after school, should walk their bikes on the sidewalk until off school property.

Morning Drop-off

Morning drop off is at the front of the campus. Since it is verydangerous for children to open car doors and walk in the flow of traffic, we ask that students exit the vehicle on the curb side.Make sure your children are prepared to exit the car on the right hand side without your assistance. Do not park or exit your vehicle at any time while in the car drop off lane. Please be respectful and courteous drivers. When dropping off students in the car lane, please pull all the way forward to allow more cars into the parking lot.
