WILLIAM FARR CHURCH OF ENGLAND COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT

This is a successful and highly motivated department which thrives on the enthusiasm of its teachers and students. There are six full-time specialist historians and two part-time History teachers. The department is situated on the ground floor of a new, purpose-built Humanities block and is well-equipped with interactive whiteboards in each teaching room.

Curriculum

History is taught in mixed ability tutor groups in Year 7, after which students are set according to ability.

The department follows the Schools History Project at GCSE, and currently runs three A level History groups. History is a popular option at GCSE level, with five sets (over half the year group) choosing to study the subject. Students follow the Edexcel course at KS 4 and A level, and exam results are well above the national average.

Government and Politics is taught within the History department. It is a popular subject at AS and A2, with good examination results achieved by the students.

Teaching and Learning

The department believes that History is a vital part of every child’s education and is committed to providing students with a variety of teaching and learning styles. There are historical visits for all years, with Year 12/13 visiting Russia in 2010 and 2012. Government and Politics teachers have developed a structured course, including active learning styles, and resources are continually added to and updated.

The History department is a team and welcomes innovative contributions from all its members.

PSME

In addition to teaching within the department, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute positively to the school’s Care and Guidance programme, including the delivery of PSME (Personal, Social and Moral Education) as part of his or her form tutor responsibilities.
