Wilderness Welcome Program Coordinator

Coordinator Expectations

The position of Wilderness Welcome Program Coordinator will provide you with great personal and professional growth potential and offer the opportunity to be a positive influence in other people’s lives.

Purpose:

Work with a team of student leaders to provide a fun, positive, safe and ecologically sound experience for our incoming Fall, freshmen. The core responsibility of the Wilderness Welcome Program Coordinator is to develop, promote and manage 2-3 trip offerings the week before classes begin in August. Ultimately the Coordinator heads the Wilderness Welcome Program under the supervision of the Adventure Programs Coordinator, a full time professional.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff:

·  The recruitment, interviewing and hiring of leaders for the summer session

·  While empowering the Leaders to research and take ownership in their trips, being available to provide direction

·  Research local staff development opportunities

Trip Planning:

·  Selection of trips, dates, prices and leader assignments

Trainings:

·  Conduct team-building facilitation trainings for staff

Brochure:

·  Organize the printing, creation and organization of a WWP brochure.

T-Shirts:

·  Create design & select style w/in budgeted amount

Retreats:

·  Work in Conjunction with the supervising full time professional to plan the logistics and schedule of events for trip leader training/retreats.

Trips:

·  Lead at least one trip for the summer (optional)

Marketing and Promotion of Events:

·  Freshman Orientation Fliers to be sent out in advance

·  Website updates to our Recreation Center Techie

·  Tabling at various campus programs and tours leading up to orientation

Records:

·  Maintain or enhance the organization of the filing cabinet, hard drive and other office resources

·  Turning in medical forms and waivers to be filed in the Risk Management filing cabinet

·  Research

·  On-going research of current standards of industry and other related information

Required Qualifications:

·  Current Sonoma State University Student

·  Passionate about the Outdoors and the ability to share your passion through teaching

·  One year or equivalent experience working with Outdoor Pursuits (preferred)

·  Committed to student leadership and development

·  Ability to supervise student staff

·  Reliable, self motivated, and able to make decisions based on Campus Recreation guiding principles

·  Approachable and Amiable, with good communication skills

·  Organized and attention to detail

·  Knowledge of computer programs: excel, word and in-design Or a willingness to learn

·  Current CPR, AED and Wilderness First Aid certifications or the willingness to obtain

Compensation:

¥ Pay Rate - $10.15/hour Access to various perks including professional development, equipment pro-purchase opportunities, and program/community resources

Time Expectation

The WWP Coordinator can expect to be in the office approximately 15 hours a week during the summer and intersession, and 15 hours during the academic semesters. You are expected weekly: to post 6 consistent office hours and attend weekly meetings: component meeting the supervising full time professional and a programmers meeting, and potluck meetings monthly. The time commitment of a WWP Coordinator, will ebb and flow during the year. Mindful time management will enable you to take time off and maintain a productive work schedule.
