Department Head – Associate/Full Professor of Curriculum and Instruction

The College of Education at Wichita State University is inviting applications for the position of Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. As a vital component of the largest city in the State of Kansas, Wichita State University is an innovation campus, thriving on the energy of a vigorous urban economy, collaborative faculty, purposeful students and skilled staff. The department of Curriculum and Instruction is the largest of four departments making up the College of Education. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher education and licensure. The department’s faculty are productive, innovative, and passionate about their work.

We seek a leader with a demonstrated interest in working collaboratively at the department, college and university levels as well as with community partners, including our professional development schools (PDS). In addition, a demonstrated capacity to facilitate faculty efforts to promote STEM teacher education and non-traditional approaches to program delivery including online delivery will be a priority. The Department Head is expected to foster creative and deliberative actions among the faculty that will advance the vision and mission of the college and university recently articulated through a comprehensive university strategic planning process.

The Head is a full time administrator who reports to the Dean of the College of Education. The position includes decision-making and budget responsibilities. The Head will be expected to lead the implementation of the Department’s strategic plan and participate fully in all accreditation matters. Position start date is June 2015.

Required Qualifications:

1. Experience and record of publication and scholarship to qualify as an Associate or Full professor.

2. Demonstrated successful leadership experience in a higher education setting.

3. Evidence of successful partnerships with College stakeholders (e.g. Professional Development Schools, community colleges, other universities, public school personnel).

4. Commitment to timely and dedicated service

5. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and to allocate resources including human, fiscal and physical.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills;

2. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines;

3. Evidence of promoting and supporting diversity and social justice;

4. Knowledge of accreditation/program review and assessment;

5. Possess a broad understanding of educational technology and its uses;

6. Demonstrated experience in promoting STEM and non-traditional program delivery initiatives.

Responsibilities:

The Department Head will: a. provide administrative leadership including program development, evaluation and quality assurance b. oversee faculty personnel matters c. manage and monitor the department’s budget d. establish and promote effective external relations and programs with constituencies such as alumni, advisory committees, P-12 institutions and industry as well as assisting in the development of external resources and e. lead the implementation of the department’s strategic plan.
