Programme Outline

Have you ever been to a smart restaurant? Do you know how to eat properly with the knives and forks? How should you order your food politely? Miss Manners has all the tips about having good table manners. First, she introduces Joseph who isa waiter.Hedemonstrates how to set a table so that you know what and where the cutlery goes on the table.Then, Uncle Tom, Tim and Sarah come to the restaurant where Joseph works. They have very bad manners when they order and eat at the table. Buttheman sitting next to them demonstrates good table manners throughout his meal.Do you want to know what goodtable manners are? Suggested Activities

1. Take a picture of children who havebad table manners (inCOPYMASTER 4) to class. Have pupils brainstorm a list of good table manners.

2. Explain the programme briefly. Introduce Miss Manners, Joseph, Uncle Tom, Tim and Sarah.

3. Teachers motivate pupils to learn about table setting in Part 1a. COPYMASTER 1. Ask pupils to draw a soup spoon, a glass, a butter knife and a napkinon the place mat. Teacher may replay the segment where the waiter is setting the table. Tell pupils to listen and watch carefully.

4. To understand the use of cutlery, pupils can refer to the lyrics in Part 1b. COPYMASTER 1. The song gives pupils a quick revision on the naming of each eating utensil and the descriptions of their sizes. Teachers may highlight the superlative and comparative adjectives such as the smallest, the shortest, shorter, bigger, longer, etc in the song.

5. Besides, pupils have to learn reading menus. In Part 2a. COPYMASTER 2, pupils fill in one of their favourite soup, food and drinksunder each category on the menu. Teachers have to explainthe food items if necessary. Explain also to pupils that the term “main course” means the main dish or food on somemenus.

6. Then in Part 2b. COPYMASTER 2, teachers help pupils complete the dialogue and ask them to practise ordering food in pairs. Pupils may make use of the menu in Part 2a. COPYMASTER2.
