Forest Information

The White Mountain National Forest encompasses approximately 796,700 acres in northern New Hampshire (including Coos, Carroll, and Grafton Counties) and western Maine (Oxford County). The Forest was established in 1918 under the provisions of the Weeks Act of 1911, which authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to purchase land for the National Forest System.

Characterized by rugged mountain peaks and the largest alpine zone in the East, the Forest has forty-eight summits of 4,000 feet and higher, including Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. This dramatic landscape, so close to major metropolitan areas (Boston, Massachusetts; New York, NY; Portland, ME; and Montreal, Quebec, are all within ½ – 1 day’s drive), has made the White Mountains a destination for people seeking a variety of recreation experiences for close to two centuries.

The landscape of the White Mountain National Forest is unique in New England. It provides opportunities that are not available on private or other public lands. The Forest’s resources are managed to ensure that their social and economic values to the region will benefit both present and future generations.

The White Mountain Region is a four season recreation destination. Recreational opportunities are numerous, including summer activities of camping, hiking, climbing, fishing - both lakes and rivers, boating, swimming, surfing - the Atlantic Ocean is a short drive (about 2 hours), wildlife watching, tax-free shopping, picnicking, the arts and other forms of entertainment too numerous to mention. During the winter months, hunting, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, winter mountaineering, ice climbing and other winter sports are popular. There are many winter ski resorts within easy driving distance of Gorham including Wildcat, Sunday River, Attitash-Bear Peak, Bretton Woods, Cranmore, and Cannon Mountain. Several world class Nordic centers serve cross-country skiers including: Great Glen Trails, Jackson Ski Touring, Bretton Woods, Bear Notch, and Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring.

District/Local Information:

The Androscoggin Ranger District is located in Coos County, New Hampshire and Oxford County, Maine. The district office is just south of Gorham, New Hampshire and was built in 1996. Gorham has a population of about 3,100 and the nearby city of Berlin has a population of about 11,800. The economy of the area is pretty evenly split between recreation and forest products. Gorham is generally thought of as a recreation community and Berlin as industrial. Both communities recognize the value of a “working forest” to provide a variety of needs for the public. Both Gorham and Berlin have public schools through high school. Nearby Bethel, Maine, hosts a private high school and offers diverse services and recreational opportunities. Berlin also hosts a regional Catholic school (K-6), a branch of the College for Lifelong Learning affiliated with the University of New Hampshire, and the White Mountains Community College. Hospital facilities are located in Berlin while Gorham hosts a medical clinic. There are several banks and credit unions in the area. Churches for just about every Christian denomination are present but places of worship for other faiths are absent. There is diversity among the predominantly Caucasian population with French being a common language, especially in Berlin.

New Hampshire is the "Live Free or Die" State, but it isn't completely free. There is no State income or sales taxes. To make up for that, property taxes can be high. Each community is different, so checking them out can be a deciding factor when buying a home. Houses in the area rent for about $400-$800 per month and sell for $100,000 to $200,000+. There are numerous homes for sale in the area where excellent buys can be found.
