PROMPTS – PHYSICS JOURNAL ENTRIES AND VELOCITY ANALYSIS

I. While at Ellis Island -Island Bring- Bring your Ellis Island Journal and a pen or pencil!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take a few pictures of yourself and your “project partners” to

include in the presentations we will complete in April!

When you are on the ferry toEllis Island –

Write what you think an immigrant must have felt. Look at the MAJESTY AND BEAUTY of the

complex. Look at the New York City sky

building. Look at the New York City sky line. line. Write what you think an immigrant must have feltInclude how you

feel today as you look at those sites. Make sketches and take

pictures. Write how you feel today as you look at the sites. Make sketches and take pictures.

When you are at Ellis Island -

When you are on Ellis Island -

Look for the two models of the Ellis Island complex that I showed

you . you. Write in your journal what you feel when you look at the

entire complex. Think about what people saw when they

looked out of their windows in various buildings. Look across at the islands you don’t have access to. Imagine you came with your family and one of you are sent to the South Side. You can only look across as you are doing today, How would you feel? How do you feel looking at the abandoned buildings?

The map I gave

you corresponds to the models, if any thing is missing from the

map, draw it on the map. Make notes in your journal about the

effect seeing the map as a scale model has on you. Does it change

your concept of the size of the complex? Does it help you

visualize a family being sent to different areas? Write down your r

thoughts about being sent toon the South side. Think about being a doctor, Think about being a

doctor, nurse, cafeteria worker, or laundry person. How is their experience walking around the

North andperson, etc. How is their

experience walking around the North and South side different from the

from the immigrants. Writeimmigrants. Write down your thoughts.

When you are on the ferry heading home -,

Look for the staff house. Sketch or take a picture. See me there!!!look at the

in that house.

Image what the house looked like when it was first built, picture the image I showed of it covered in vines and look at it now stabilizednow stabilizedbut notbut not fully restored. Think about the doctors living there. Think about those in the wards looking at the Statue of Liberty but not able to leave the island. Write down your thoughts positive and negative about those who passed through Ellis Island as you look at the Statue of Liberty.

II. Speed/Velocity to Ellis Island – Then and Now

Calculate the speed/velocity of a trip by boat in the early 1900’s from the country of birth of a relative to Ellis Island and compare it to a trip by plane from that same country to Newark Liberty Airport today. Assume the distances are the same. Do research-get actual mileage, ship speeds and plane speeds (how about the Concorde?) Include wind speed, ocean currents, stopovers, etc? Comment on the impact of technological advancements in transportation. This is the minimum requirement for the paper.

Besides calculating the numbers, picture yourself on that boat in the 1900’s and the plane in 2000’s. What factors affected each trip? Think about security checks since 9/11. How easy was/is it to move between countries? Think about legal/social/economic factors that affect the trips. See if you can relate advancements in science and technology to some of those factors. Be creative.

PROMPTS – PHYSICS INTERVIEWS, LAB REPORT AND PPT PRESENTATION

III. INTERVIEWS-

Interview a family member, friend, neighbor or classmate who immigrated to

the United States. Find out how and why they came to this country. What was

the legal process to enter this country and to become an American citizen?

What do they miss most about the country they left? What do they like most about this

country?

Speak to your own parents (grandparents) and document your own heritage.

IV. LAB REPORT –

Find the density and specific heat capacity of brick and sand/stone samples.

In addition to standard lab report data analysis include why these materials versus

other materials were used on Ellis Island. Would these same materials be used if

Ellis Island was built today? What about cost of material, cost of labor, etc.

Visit a local 4 Century Site - what materials were used? Why were they used?
