Human Evolution Timeline Homework – Chaps 12 - 15

10 points. Use last week’s primate timeline as a model.(Updated 14 May 2013)

Use these hominin names on the timeline shown on the back of this sheet. You should also use this list as a study guide and add details below or on flashcards.

For fossils or fossil radiations, know key facts, dates, sites, and key characteristics. For sites, know dates, fossils, and locations on a world map.

Put these hominin names on the time line.

Radiations go on left side.

Fossils go on right side.Remember: Genus species (watch use of caps).

Put them approximately at their dates.

Early biped radiation

Ororrin

Sahelanthropus

Ardipithecus

Kenyanthropus

Australopithecus anamensis

Au. africanus

Au. garhi

Au. afarensis

Robust homs radiation

Paranthropus aethiopicus

P. boisei

P. robustus

GenusHomo radiation

Homo habilis

H. rudolfensis

Homo erectus

Homo ergaster

H. antecessor

H. heidelbergensis

Know these site names, but do not put them on the time line.

Laetoli

Hadar

Lake Turkana

Olduvai

ShanidarCave

Omo

Cro-Magnon

This is the only side that will get graded. Write horizontally unless told otherwise.

Read these directions carefully. Make a neat diagram. Do not add more details than this.

1. Draw the end of the Miocene epoch (5 mya) and thePliocene (5 – 2.6 mya), Pleistocene (2.6 mya – 12 kya), and Holocene (12 kya – now).

  • Note that the tick marks show millions of years ago, not epoch dates.
  • Draw lines across the whole page at the appropriate dates.

2. Add the names of each epoch VERTICALLY along the left margin.

3.On the left side: Add the adaptive radiations of hominins key to each epoch.

  • The adaptive radiations are in bold on the other side of this page.
  • Some of them overlap; show those side by side.

4. On the right side: Add the names of fossils to each epoch (use list on other side).

  • Put them roughly where they belong in time. Some will overlap. Watch use of caps.

5. Wherever it fits: Draw a line from each dot on the time line to an available space.

  • Add the “First” of hominin anatomy that occurred at that time.
  • Add the name of a fossil example.
  • Use
