“when water becomes wine”

John 2:1 – 11

Today, we continue our sermon series through the Gospel of John. we will investigate – Jesus’ first miracle turning water into wine. Wine was the normal drink of the people in that day and we must not use this miracle as an argument for the use of alcoholic beverages today. Because of a lack of water purification process, wine mixed with water was safer to drink than water alone.

What is a Miracle? It is a supernatural manifestation and intervention of divine power into the natural world. It is a physical revelation of the presence and power of the Living God. A miracle requires three things: a NEED, an EMERGENCY, and a FAITH in God. ______

The Bible teaches that Jesus attended a wedding in Cana of Galilee with His mother and six of His disciples. During the course of the wedding reception or feast, the host family runs out of wine. ______

The Gospel of John confirms that when the wine ran out, Mary reports the matter to Jesus in hopes that He could solve this embarrassing issue. ______

______

The Word of God makes plain that Jesus was not looking to get involved in this domestic dilemma. ______

______

§  This wedding in Cana was a major party; the entire town had been invited to the event. If ever there is hope for a miracle, you first must invite Jesus to the event. ______

§  Because Jesus was at the wedding, the possibility of a miracle was probable. ______

______

§  Mary declares the NEED for the wine to be an EMERGENCY and that her FAITH in her Son, Jesus would make a difference. ______

______

§  Mary’s admonition to the servants to do what Jesus tells them to do is still sound advice for us today. ______

§  Sometimes, you gotta run out of your stuff before you can be filled up with God’s stuff. ______

§  At the wedding feast, there were six large stone water pots, which held about twenty gallon each.

§  Stop trying to rewrite or reinterpret God’s Word. That is, we must follow God’s Word exactly.

§  The more our hearts are “FILLED” with the spirit, the less our hearts are “CONTROLLED” by the world. ______

§  The Master of the banquet, in charge of the festivities, tasted the wine and found it to be superior to what they had been drinking. The common custom was the best wine was served first and the lesser quality served later. ______

§  Here in Cana, the NEED for wine is the EMERGENCY of now, and the FAITH of Mother Mary in her son Jesus produces this first miracle ______

§  The significance of this miracle is that Christianity is an advance over Judaism. God has kept the best gift of His Son until now. ______

______

§  The first miracle points to the kind of transforming ministry Jesus would have. ______
