Shelfari Online Bookshelf

Welcome Fellow Knights!

We are so happy that you have decided to participate in the Wheaton High School Summer Reading Program 2010. An extension of this program is Shelfari ( a Web 2.0 Tool that will allow participants to have online discussions about the books they are reading. The purpose of this document is to provide you with step by step directions of how to create your own account, add books to your personal bookshelf, how to join the Wheaton High School Knights Group, see the discussions, and post replies to the discussions, or start your own discussions. So let’s get started.

Creating a Shelfari account (two steps)

Step 1

Log-on to a computer, launch the Internet and type in

In the example above, Google is the search engine that is being used. Once you type in the URL please click the Google Search button. You will then see the screen below.

Click the Welcome to Shelfari! Read, Share, Explore! – Shelfari link in purple font.

Special Note: For users that have already established accounts you can simply click on the Log-in link above in blue font to access your account. If your received an e-mail from Ms. Brown, the media specialist with your account information, then you should click on the Log-in link and type in your account information.

You will then be at the Shari Home Page, which is pictured below.

You are welcomed to take a Take the Tour (orange button), search for a book, or click on any button or link you wish to explore the site.

Step 2

Click Join Now (green button) to create your own Shelfari account.

Please type in all the information requested for as seen below. Feel free to click on the Privacy Policy link (in blue) when typing in your e-mail information.

Please make sure you scroll down and click on the Create Account button to complete your registration.

Please make sure you record your account information for future reference, but Shelfari will send you account information to your e-mail account. Feel free to click on the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy links in blue font for additional information.

Congratulations! You have just created a Shelfari account.

Once you have created your account you have three steps to follow. The first one is below. Feel free to skip this step if you wish. In this training packet, this step will be skipped. Please click the skip button at the bottom of the screen as shown in the diagram below.

Adding Books to your bookshelf

Step One

To add your first book to your bookshelf click on the gray book titled What Are You Reading Now.

Once you click on the What Are You Reading Now? button, which looks like a book you will have several options which are pictured below.

You may click on one of the books displayed by clicking on the Add button (in blue), but it is recommended that you type in a book of your choice at the top the screen in the dialog box and click on the Search button.

Cyber Safety Tip: Since Shelfari is a free site to its users, on some pages there will be advertisements. Please be very careful about clicking on an advertisement and make sure you do not sign up for anything you are not fully aware of. The recommendation is to ignore all advertisements.

If you are interested in the books that pop up and want more information about them place your mouse over the book cover and a summary of the book will appear. See picture below.

To add a book of your choice type in the title of your book in the dialog box at the top of the screen as shown below. As you are typing the application will fill in what you are typing, including the author of the book. My book is Elizabeth Street by Laurie Fsnisno.

Once you have typed in your book title click the Search button. A listing of books will appear as shown below.

Click the Add button to add your selected book to your personal bookshelf. Once you click add you have several screens to fill out about your book. You select which ones you want to answer, but it is recommended that you provide as much information as you can. The first question is below. Click on the appropriate choice and click Next.

The next step is for you to rate the book by clicking on the stars and write what you think about it if have already read it and click next. If you have not read it, you can go back and edit this information later. You are also free to click on any links or tabs for more options and information. Please do not forget to click on Next.

On the next screen below you may fill out information if you wish, if not click on the Next button.

On the next screen you will add tags. You may do this by clicking on the tags provided, and they will automatically appear in the box, or you can type in your own tags.

The next step is to add tags. You can just click on the ones that are provided or type in your own. Then click Next.

Once you have clicked on the provided tags, they will appear in the box as seen in the picture below. When finished click on the Mort To Do tab in the bottom right hand corner of the page.

You are almost done. The book has been added to your shelf, but you still have a few options as shown below. To add to the Wheaton High Knights Group Shelf you just click on the Add to group shelf link

Once you click on Add to group shelf you will see the screen below. Use your mouse and click on the down arrow in the Books box to the left of the Search button and you will see you have four choices and Book/Authors is always selected. Click on Groups.

Once you select groups you will see that the word book changes to group and you then type in WheatonHigh School and click on search. You will find our group. Note: Knights is spelled wrong, and it has been corrected and saved, but at the time of the writing of these instructions the saved change has not occurred.

Just click on the Wheaton High School Knights Summer Reading 2010

Note: Knights is now spelled correctly. On the right hand side of the screen you will see Join this Group, click on this link. Note: If you scroll down you can see the group bookshelf and members, and see the discussions, but you cannot add books or reply to or start discussions until you join the group.

As you can see by the green check mark you are now a member. To Start a NewDiscussion just click on that link and follow the steps and make sure you hit the Save button to save what you have done.

Cyber Safety Tip: Shelfari has video clip ads from Google. These are a part of the site and cannot be changed. Please be advised that this is not MCPS material, but is it usually from television networks like NBC, ABC, CBS. Please be reminded that this is a free site and that is why there are advertisements.

Add your picture to your account

Step 1

Please click on the account setting in the top right hand corner of the screen (in black and white)

Please click on the edit link to change any of the settings.

Scroll down to add your photo. Be sure you click on the edit button.

You can also add a description about yourself.

Cyber Safety Tip: Please be careful of information you share on the web-site because other people who use the site will be able to see your information. Never put any information about where you live, or when you are traveling, and etc.

Once you click on edit, then click on the Upload button.

Your documents will open.

Navigate to your picture on your account (MCPS Teachers) TShared, Staff Pictures. Click on My Computer and then click on staff on WHS 782 as below.

Then click in TShared as shown below.

Click on TShared and then navigate to Staff Pictures (it should be there), or you navigate to where you have your pictures saved. Once you click the picture it will load.

Now you have created your own shelf and joined the Wheaton High School Knights Summer 2010 group. Congratulations! Please scroll down to see what a new page looks like. Please add more books, and click on the blue links on the right side of the screen to add more information that you think is appropriate for you.
