Watch Your Mouth… message series

“What is Wrong with Cursing?”

*How prevalent is cursing in our world?

In fact, is there anywhere in our lives that we do not hear cursing?

*Is cursing something you have struggled with now or in the past?

Why do you think that was/is?

*In light of our message series, why do you think it is important for us to think about this and ask God to

help us with it?

#1. What does God say about using bad language?

-Read Eph. 4:29.

What is that verse saying?

Talk about the different points of emphasis in that verse.

What does it specifically say that would relate to cursing?

-We have all heard the statement, “That person has a filthy mouth.”

Eph. 4:29 affirms that filthy, rotten words can come out of our mouths but that they shouldn’t.

Can you think of times when those kinds of words have come out of your mouth?

Why do you think that happened?

Can you think of times that you heard filthy things come out of someone else’s mouth?

Why do you think that happened?

-What are some things that might not be curse words but are not appropriate to say or do in

our culture? Why is it important for us to avoid those things?

-In II Tim. 3:2, the Bible says that, in the last days before Christ returns, there will be many people who

use very rough language. What opportunity does that give Christians to be a witness for God?

#2. Do we really want to curse or swear or be profane?

-When are the moments when you might be most vulnerable to curse or say something that is not

honoring to God? Have you been growing stronger in not doing that? What has helped you?

-Read Eph. 5:3-4. Those verses say Christians have been changed. How has giving your life to Jesus

caused you to want to live differently?

-Read I Pet. 3:8-10. Christians are called to be a blessing. How does that change our desires and make

us not want to curse?

-Do you use the term “I swear” a lot? Did you know that it indicated that you were making a promise to

God in some important way, or have you been using it much more loosely?

#3. Where is all this bad language coming from?

-After this series, we might think to ourselves, “I need to change my language.”, and that could be a

good thing. According to Matt. 12:34b, instead of focusing on changing our language, God says

we should focus on something else that causes the bad language. What is that? Why do you

think God says that?

-Why would we prefer to try really hard to change our language than to let God change our heart?

-Can you remember some of the reasons that were shared in the message that we use bad language?

What are some of those things that you struggle with?

Is God maybe wanting to work on that part of your life more than your language?
