What is the Manager?

A number of different terms are often used instead of the term «manager», including «director», «administrator» and «president». The term «manager» is used more frequently in profit-making organizations, while the others are used more widely in government and non-profit organizations such as universities, hospitals and social work agencies.

So, who do we call a «manager»?

In its broad meaning the term «managers» applies to the people who are responsible for making and carrying out decisions within a sertain system. A personnel manager directly supervises people in an organization. Financial manager is a person who os responsible for finance. Sales manager is responsible for selling of goods.

Almost everything a manager does involves decision-making. When a problem exists a manager has to make a decision to solve it. In decision-making there is always some unsertainly and risk.

Management is a variety of specific activities. Management is a function of planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling. Any managerial system, at any managerial level, is characterized in terms of these general functions.

Managing is a responsible and hard job. There is a lot to be done and relatively little time to do it. In all tipes of organizations managerial efficiency depends on manager's direct personal relationship, hard work on a variety of activities and preference for active tasks.

The characteristics of management often vary according to national culture, which can determine how managers are trained, how they lead people and how they approach their jobs.

The amount of responsibility of any individual in a company depends on the position that he or she occupies in its hierarchy. Managers, for example, are responsible for leading the people directly under them, who are called subordinates. To do this successfully, they must use their authority, which is the right to take decisions and give orders. Managers often delegate authority. This means that employees at lower levels in the company hierarchy can use their initiative, that is make decisions without asking their manager.

Answer the questions:

  1. What is manager's role in an organization?
  2. What concrete activities a production manager (financial manager, personnel manager, marketing manager) is responsible for?
  3. What is the difference between sales management and marketing management?
  4. What means to delegate authority?

Most people work to earn a living, and produce goods and services. Goods are either agricultural (like maize and milk) or manufactured (like cars and paper). Services are such things sa education, medicine and commerce. Some people provide goods; some provide services. Other people provide both goods and services. For example, in the same garage a man may buy a car or some service which helps him to maintain his car.

The work people do is called economic activity. All economic activities together make up the economic system of a town, a city, a country or the world. Such an economic system is the sum-total of what people do and what they want. The work people undertake either provides what they need or provides the money with which they can buy essential commodities. Of course, most people hope to earn enough money to buy commodities and services which are non-essential but which provide some particular personal satisfaction, like toys for children, visits to the cinema and books.

Angela's new job

Angela Read was very happy to get the job at Mega Mags. She wrote to a friend about a month after she started there. This is part of her letter.

I'm an office assistant at Mega Mags now. The work is really interesting , and I've got a very good boss. She's very nice and helps me a lot. She really understands the problems of a working mother (she's got two children, too). I work full-time. The working hours are normal, 38 hours a week, but they have flexy-time. I must be there from 10 to 12 and 2 to 4 every day. I can work the other 18 hours when I want. That's very good. My salary isn't very good at the moment, but I'll earn more after my computer course, and then more again after one year with Mega Mags. I get 5 weeks' holidays a year. Oh – and they give me all their magazines (the ones that I want)!!! I think Mega Mags is a good employer, and I'm happy there. The only problem is I have to work on a computer for hours and hours (no more pens and pencils for me!) I'm sure this is bad for my eyes! How's your job?
