4th Grade Colonial Virginia Day

Friday, March 11, 2016 – All-Day Event!

Don’t Miss It!!

What is “Colonial Virginia Day”?

Colonial Virginia Day is an event for 4th grade students at Marshall Road. Students will experience a fun-filled, yet educational, activity-planned day. Our 4th graders will get a chance to experience what living during “Colonial Times” was like.

Dress for Colonial Virginia Day

All students are encouraged to dress appropriate for Colonial Times (suggestions are at the back of this flyer). Students will get to experience many hands-on events, includingtin punching, making fragrant pomander balls, and butter making! They will also play indoor games from the time period and finish the day with boy/girl folk dancing (the Virginia Reel!)

Dressing for Colonial Virginia Day

Optional -we would like the students to wear a colonial costume for the day. All costumes can be made inexpensively from clothing you have at home. Below are some guidelines for homemade costumes.

Here is how you can ‘fake it’ for a day: (BOYS)

  • A plain white shirt with sleeves that go to wrist
  • “Breeches” can be made from old pants cut at the knee and folded into a cuff. Short baseball pants are a great alternative.
  • White long baseball or soccer type socks that meet the cuff of the breeches.
  • A plain vest (optional)
  • Cuffs for the wrist. We have these already made.
  • A straw, felt hat, tricorn hat or cloth cap if you wish.

(the boys will be making paper tricorn hats in school but if you are able to purchase and donate your tricorn hat to the Colonial Virginia Day Program, it would be much appreciative!! It will be used for future Colonial Virginia Day events.

Here is how you can ‘fake it’ for a day (GIRLS)

  • A plain white shirt with sleeves that go to your elbow or wrist
  • A long skirt, either plain, striped or checked
  • A handkerchief or cloth napkin, tied at the neck (this was for modesty and to prevent sunburn). We provide these if you do not have one.
  • Aplain apron that ties at the waist.
  • Mobcap – we have these available for each girl to borrow for the day. You may also wear your own, if you have one. Make sure it is labeled.
