Test Review:

Topographic Maps and Erosional Features

What is a topographic map? How is it used?It shows physical features of a map. The elevation can be measured over time.

What color are the contour lines on a topographic map?

Brown

What do contour lines that are very close together indicate?

A steep slope

What do contour lines that are spread out indicate?

A gentle slope

What do contour lines that form a V indicate?

A river

How does a topographic map compare to a satellite view? Both give information about an area or land form. A topographic map is drawn and satellite is a photograph. Topographic map has detailed information on elevation.

Which tool would you rather have to plan a hiking trip, a topographic map or a satellite view of the hiking area? Why? I would rather have a topographic map because by looking at the contour lines I can determine how to hike a certain area.

Which tool would you prefer to use to identify erosion of a landform over time, a topographic map or a satellite view?A topographic map is a good tool to measure the effects of erosion on a landform as you can use the actual changes in slope and elevation to determine the amount of change. However, remapping an area multiple times may be very time consuming. A satellite view is a good way to observe changes in water levels and sediment deposition over time

If you were an 8th grade teacher, how would you explain the difference between erosion, weathering, and deposition? An 8th grade teacher may tell students that rock or dirt moving is Erosion. The particles are being moved and broken down as they travel. Weathering is a stationary process. The rock is sitting still while water, wind, and ice are reacting with the surface causing it to crack and/or break down.

What would you look for in a series of topographic maps to determine that erosion has occurred?Widening of the spaces between contour lines. Lowers the elevation.

Explain how to recognize a creek or streambed on a topographic map. Explain how to know the direction it is flowing to and from. The tip of the V-shaped contour line points towards where the water is coming from and the wide part of the V-shaped contour line shows where the river is flowing to.

What would you look for in a series of topographic maps to determine that deposition has occurred? It would raise the elevation of the area.

Explain and draw the following words:

Erosion –The process in which gravity, wind, water and ice move sediment from one place to another

Deposition –Sediment is dropped in a new place, which change the landscape.

Weathering- the process of breaking down rocks into sediments

Scale-indicates the relationship between a certain distance EX: 1 cm to 10 km

Compass Rose- direction .North, East, South, West

Depression- Lower Elevation

Contour lines- Imaginary lines that connect points of equal elevation

Index contours- change in elevation from one line to another

Peak –the highest elevation

Contour Intervals-Change in elevation from one line to another

Hachure-Close loop with dashes inside that show depression
