OAHS SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT FAQ’S

·  What if my child did not read 2 books this summer and /or complete the written assignment(s)?

Students who did not complete the requirement this summer must make it up prior to graduation. ALSO, if they did no independent reading over the summer, then they will have to select and read a book in order to complete the in class essay given at the English teacher’s discretion.

·  What if my child read MORE than 2 books this summer?

Students who read more than the required 2 books a summer may “bank” books for the following summer and could complete this component of the graduation portfolio requirement early.

·  Will my child be able to use the completed assignment(s) for the in class essay given by the English teacher?

Yes. Students should either keep a copy of all assignments turned in, OR, they may ask their homeroom teacher for a copy to use during the essay.

·  Will the summer reading assignments affect my child’s grade or GPA in any way?

Yes, and no. The only way the assignment will affect your child’s grade, will be via the in class essay in English. However, if your child did not complete the summer reading assignment, but did read a book, he/she may use the knowledge of that independent reading book to complete the in class essay. Students who have completed the summer reading assignment will have an advantage in that they will be able to use the completed assignment as they write the in class essay.

·  Why do TCHS students have to do this?

We recognize that TCHS students have their own portfolio’s to complete via TCHS, but it is the prerogative of the OASD as it has been approved by the school board, to have ALL students participate in some form of summer reading requirement.

·  Why are students who take AP or Honors English exempt from the summer reading requirement?

Any student who takes AP English in grades 11 and/or 12, and any student who takes Honors English in grades 9 and/or 10 must complete a more rigorous summer reading and writing assignment in order to take the course. Therefore, they are meeting a summer reading requirement. However, if a student takes Honors English in grade 9, but not in grades 10-12 for example, then he or she would still be responsible for completing 4 summer reading assignments as part of the graduation portfolio.
