Homework Q&A

What does my child need to do for homework?

Monday – Thursday:

  • CLOSE reading activity – your child will be given an article each Monday to use for the week. Each day the students will read, or reread, the passage (multiple times increases comprehension) and then complete the activity of the day.
  • Spelling & vocabulary choice board – your child will complete 1 activity from this choice board daily and cannot do the same assignments more than once in a week.
  • Math Worksheet – your child will be given a math worksheetwith selected problems to complete from the math topic we are learning about in class.
  • Mad Minute fluency practice – reading & math
  • Read for 20 minutes daily.

By Friday:

  • Reading Choice Board – your child will complete 1 reading choice board activity a week from the book they have been reading independently.
  • 30 minutes of IStation (some time given in class)
  • 3 Passed lessons of i-Ready (some time given in class)

Weekend:

  • Grade folder brought home, reviewed & signed by parent/guardian, and returned on Monday.

What does my child do if they forget their homework assignment at school?

In the event your child leaves something at school here are some options of what they
can do to substitute for the missing assignment:
(email me or write a note in their agenda to let me know.)

  • Make it up the next day (the negative Class Dojo point still applies)
  • Visit NewsELA.com and pick an article to have them complete their CLOSE reading assignment.
  • Log into IStation.com (reading) or i-Ready.com (math) and complete an extra lesson (will not counted as part of their 3 lessons or 30 minutes a week).
  • Visit my page on the school’s website to get access to the spelling lists, CLOSE reading daily assignment instructions, and choice boards. ( > classrooms > 4th grade > Ms. Couch)

What should I do to help my child complete their homework?

What you can do to help your child is to remind your child about grammar (capital letters, spelling, complete sentences, etc.) in their writing and ask them questions about the reading articles to deepen their understanding. In math, if you notice they are making the same mistakes point it out and give them a little more support in that one area.

Where can I find up-to-date information on my child’s homework?

  • You can find all the pages in your child’s homework folder on my teacher page on the Sawgrass Bay website. ( > classrooms > 4th grade > Ms. Couch)
  • You can check the weekly newsletter (emailed to you and put on my page on the SBE website.)
  • You can check your child’s agenda daily to see the most up-to-date homework assignments; generally, homework follows the same routine, but is subject to change depending on class progress.

What happens if my child doesn’t do their homework?

Every day I check homework. If it is incomplete or not turned in your child will get a negative point on Class Dojo. If it is done, they get a positive point.

Every week we have a 4th grade Fun Friday. The last 30 minutes of each Friday we offer a variety of fun activities for the students to participate in IF they haveall their homework done. If they have missing homework assignments, they will go to the work room to work on homework or another school assignment during this time.

A pattern of not completing homework will result in a classroom infraction report and possibly a parent conference request. Homework is not graded, but is meant to help students practice what they have learned in the classroom. This one-on-one time with an adult that knows them best is extremely beneficial.
