Overview

  • In this lesson students will explore wants and needs. Through a video, class discussion and a guided activity, students will be able to differentiate between needs they must have in order to live and wants they desire.

Materials

  • Handout #1 and #2“Wants and Needs” (included)
  • Video Segment from Discovery Education: “Review and Conclusion “on wants and needs (1 min 15 sec)(You must be logged in through the M-DCPS employee portal to access this video)

Time

  • 20 minutes

Activity Sequence

INTRODUCTION/HOOK

  • Tell students that today’s class will be learning the difference between wants and needs. Write the definitions for the words: wants and needs on the board. Discuss the meanings and give examples of each. (3 minutes)

ACTIVITY

  1. Watch the video segment from Discovery Education on “Review and Conclusion” on wants and needs (2 minutes)
  1. Discuss the video presentation with students and relate it to the information from the introduction. (2 minutes)
  1. Distribute Handout #1. Have students work in pairs to identify each item ion the chart.
  1. Then distribute Handout #2. Stil in pairs, have students work together to decide if each item in handout #1 is a “want” or a “need.” Students should then cut, and paste the pictures from Handout #1 onto the appropriate Wants or Needs column in Handout #2. (10 minutes)

CLOSURE

Have students share the different answers they provided in the handout. Discuss why items were placed in each column Then lead a student discussion of answers to the essential questions.(3 minutes)

OPTIONAL EXTENSION SUGGESTION/HOME LEARNING

  • Home Learning Assignment for this lesson should be for students to do research about the things that are needed and home versus the things that are wanted.
