Dear Parents,

What a lovely group of 3rd Graders I got to see all fancied up for Picture Day on Monday! I can’t wait to see how the pictures turn out. 

Please check your child’s backpack for a red note today. On that red note are the requirements/instructions for the Soap Box Car that goes along with our Force & Motion unit! It is a project to be done at home as a family. As much as possible, please have each member of your household contribute something to the car (even if it’s as simple as putting a sticker on the car). These cars are to be built with materials you have at home already – there should be little to no expense to make them. The completed car is part of your child’s Science grade. The cars are due by Wednesday, October 18th, and we will race them against all other 3rd Graders’ cars shortly thereafter.

We have been busy learners this week!In Math, we worked on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, odd vs. even numbers, and ordering numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least. We are finishing up our Force & Motion unit in Science. We continue to work on needed Phonics skills and have also started new books in Reading. Map skills are being introduced in Social Studies.

Please encourage your child to finish the August/September Reading Goal – the deadline is next Friday!He/she should have some library books at his/her Lexile level for the August/September Reading Goal. One should be fiction, and the other should be non-fiction. Have your child read these independently. When the book(s) is read, send the book(s) back so an Accelerated Reader test can be taken here at school. 80% or higher is a passing score. Once both books have been read and both tests passed, your child will be able to attend the 3rd Grade Reading Party for these months. The deadline for the August/September Reading Goal is Friday, September 29th.

Attached to this newsletter are next week’s Spelling words – plurals! The test over those words will be next Friday, September 22nd. Homework is also attached! The Math homework is rounding (due Tues.), and the Reading homework is synonyms <words that have the same meaning> (due Thurs.).The homework MUST be signed by an adultand completed with pencil. Your signature shows that your child took on the responsibility of letting you know he/she had homework. (All homework I send should be such that your child can finish it on his/her own. You do not need to check over it unless you wish to do so. )

We have been working hard on learning our school’s Character Ed. traits and putting them into action. 3rd Graders who have been showing those traits will have earned the privilege of painting their handprints on the wall here at Central next week! Please check in with your child about what the traits are and how they are doing with their character. 
