  1. The Northwest Territory was the area around the Great Lakes. Congress created the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to explain how new states could be formed.

Chapter 11

Lesson 1 (p. 372-375)

  1. Daniel Boone crossed the Appalachian Mountains through Kentucky and created the Wilderness Trail. This was the first national road. He set up the first settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains.
  2. The Louisiana Purchase was when President Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana from France.
  3. Lewis and Clark were two explorers President Jefferson sent through the new Louisiana Purchase to explore it. They traveled from St. Louis, Missouri to Oregon (see map p.375). They did these things on their expedition:
  4. Created maps of the land.
  5. Created trails that new settlers could follow.
  6. Took notes and drew pictures of new animals and plants they found.
  7. Zebulon Pike explored the top areas of the Mississippi River. Later, he went west below the area of Lewis and Clark to map the area around Colorado. Pike’s Peak is a mountain in Colorado named after him. (not in book…discussed in class.

Chapter 12

Lesson 1 (p.403, p.405, p.406)

  1. The Florida Purchase was the result of fighting between the Spanish in Florida and the American settlers nearby. (p.403)
  2. The Indian Removal Act was a law passed by the U.S. that said the Indians would leave their lands and move west (see map p.405). If they refused, they would be forced off their land.
  3. The Cherokee Indians resisted the new law. They went to the Supreme Court, but were still forced to move. The path they took is called the Trail of Tears because so many of them died along the way. (p.406)
  4. The Seminole Warswere fought in Florida because the Seminole Indians refused to give up their land and move peacefully. (not in book – discussed in class)

Lesson 1 (p.432-435)

  1. Manifest Destiny was the idea that the U.S. should extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean. In order to have this dream, we would have to get Texas and the land all the way to California. (p.433)
  2. Texas used to be part of Mexico, but the people there won a war with Mexico and won independence. Then the settlers who lived in Texas decided they wanted to be part of the United States. The annexation of Texas was when Texas was added to the United States. (p.432-433)
  3. Then the United States had a war with Mexico after we got Texas. The U.S. won and we got new land called the Mexican Cession. This land included all the area from Texas to California. (p.434-435)

Lesson 2

  1. Now that the U.S. had land all the way west to the Pacific Ocean, people started to settle all the new land. They created new trails to get there:
  2. The Oregon Trail was a 2,000 mile trail from Independence, Missouri to Oregon. (p.439 and red on map p.440)
  3. The Santa Fe Trail was a trail from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. (in green on map p.440)
  4. People migrated (moved) to the west for many reasons. (discussed in class)
