MINUTES
Attendees: Debbie Kaplan, RESA I; Teresa Ryan, RESA II; Rhonda Tabit, RESA IV; Alisa Shepler, RESA V; Diane Baker, RESA VI; Nancy Bradshaw, RESA VII; Sharon Clark, RESA VIII; Rebecca King, WVDE; and, Brenda Tuckwiller.
1. The meeting was called to order at 10:20 by Teresa Ryan, Chair.
2. Brenda Tuckwiller of Greenbrier County was introduced as the elected representative for RESA IV to replace Rhonda Tabit.
3. Rebecca King gave the following updates from WVDE:
A. Question posed to WVDE on what to do for Pre-K students who do not have required physical and dental screenings completed prior to entry in school. Advised to allow a 30-day grace period for parent to have completed counties to follow policy requirements and make decision on grace period for comprehensive physical and dental screening not to exceed a 30 day grace period but must have proper immunizations before entry. They will be reviewing the requirement for dental screenings in Policy 2525.
B. Policy 2423 (Communicable Disease Policy) passed and is effective July 1, 2007. This gives counties one year to implement the immunization check for 6th/9th graders. A listing of recommended adolescent immunizations will be prepared and sent out from the Immunization Department at the Bureau of Public Health (BPH).
C. The Asthma/Diabetes Education CD-ROM is nearly complete. It will be introduced at the School Nurse Institute (SNI) in Charleston this summer.
D. Larry Chauncey would like a school nurse to speak to a pharmacist’s group on pediatric diabetes. It was recommended that Nancy Starcher of Mineral County be contacted to be the presenter.
E. Alisa Shepler inquired about problems with obtaining insulin syringes with ½ unit increments. It was recommended that she contact Peg Adams or Marie Gravely at the BPH Diabetes Program.
4. Screening Recommendations:
A. Scoliosis: Teresa Ryan read the revised scoliosis recommendation. Additional revisions made.
B. Hearing: No recommendation written. An audiologist will be coming to the SNI to speak about training and certification for nurses who do hearing screenings.
C. Vision: Review and revised. Diane Baker will rewrite and present for review at next meeting.
D. Dental: Reviewed and revised. Rhonda Tabit will make changes and forward to Becky King.
E. Head Lice: Reviewed and revised. Sharon Clark will make changes and forward to Becky King.
5. Council reviewed suggested changes related to Policy 2422.7. Council agreed no changes needed at this time. They will reconsider when additional information available on other policy changes that may affect language of Policy 2422.7
6. The Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedure Manual for WV Schools (BSHCPM) was reviewed per suggested changes. Becky King will check with CDC guidelines to see if use of disposable wipes is acceptable for handwashing alternative. Council will reconsider at next meeting. Other suggested changes were reviewed and were deemed unnecessary at this time.
7. Development of a school nurse evaluation tool will be tabled until the next school year.
8. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
9. The next meeting will be at the Fall Conference of WVASN in Mineral Wells, WV.
