Housing Development Coordinator

West Broadway Development Corporation (WBDC)

WBDC is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that coordinates neighbourhood renewal in West Broadway. WBDC works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic revitalization of this neighbourhood. Our mission is to strengthen West Broadway through respectful partnerships, relationship building and community-led development. BASIC FUNCTION

The Housing Development Coordinator oversees the implementation of the goals, objectives, priorities, and housing initiatives identified in the neighbourhood’s Housing Plan; reviews and develops housing proposals and; coordinates all housing revitalization activities in the West Broadway neighbourhood

JOB OBJECTIVES

To coordinate the implementation of the West Broadway Housing Plan 2008 – 2012 in association with local residents and housing stakeholders, and to carry out retrospective evaluations of the implementation of these plans

The West Broadway Housing Plan: Work in Progress 2008-2012, Six (6) Goal areas and respective objectives are:

1.  To address core housing needs, especially for historically marginalized peoples, single parents, aboriginal peoples, person with disabilities and/or mental challenges and addictions, students, youth-at-risk and seniors that have been subject to rising median market rents and utility cos6ts.

2.  To improved rooming house tenants’ living conditions and quality of life by facilitating housing improvements and advocacy awareness programming for landlords, tenants and caretakers.

3.  To promote and maintain the historical integrity and architectural character of the neighbourhood housing stock and ensure that development and property improvements conforms to neighbourhood zoning regulations and land use patterns.

4.  To promote alternative development though new infill housing projects and opportunities for non-profit housing providers, tenants and homeowners.

5.  To address resident and community concerns about available green-space.

6.  To sustain housing development and co-ordination activities in West Broadway.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Housing Development Coordinator will be responsible for the following activities:

·  Facilitate public consultation meetings on neighbourhood housing priorities and implement the housing planning process, as required

·  Partner with local housing providers, government and community agencies, to encourage housing development and revitalization that is reflective of community priorities as outlined in the West Broadway Housing Plan 2008 – 2012

·  Implement WBDC’s Housing Development Policy and facilitate funding endorsements for non-profit and private sector housing providers

·  Working with WBDC staff to maintain an inclusive, respectful workplace

·  Representing West Broadway and WBDC at appropriate events

·  Liaison with the various levels of government to ensure the implementation of City by laws, building code and housing standards in West Broadway

·  Facilitate existing housing rehabilitation and new housing developments utilizing environmentally sustainability principles and practices

·  Provide housing referral service for government housing programs

·  Write funding proposals for housing initiatives

·  Provide advice and administrative support to local housing stakeholder organizations and private developers

·  Broker funding with government, foundations and private sector agencies

·  Project manage the Property Improvement Program (PIP Grants), Property Improvement Program for Efficiency (PIPE) pilot

·  Supporting broader community efforts as a representative of WBDC staff (eg.attending staff meetings, helping out at WBDC events - spring clean up, AGM, etc)

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

Required: Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Urban Planning or Community Development Worker Diploma and/or equivalent education and experience

Experience

Three to five years of related work experience in community-based housing delivery, community planning, housing development and research

Knowledge

A background in not-for-profit housing development, community-based planning and community initiatives implementation would be an asset

Skills in the following areas are essential to the position:

·  Public speaking

·  Project Management

·  Community development approaches and practices

·  Writing reports and funding proposals

·  Environmental sustainability principles

·  Working with marginalized individuals

·  Ability to work with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds

WAGE, BENEFITS, AND HOURS

·  $38,000 - $43,000, salary commensurate with experience

·  40 hours / week, some evening and weekend work required

·  Comprehensive health and dental benefits package through the Chamber of Commerce

·  Pension plan of 2.5% gross earnings after six months of service
