2015 WA Volunteer Service Awards

The WA Volunteer Service Awards program recognises volunteers who have provided 25 or 50 years or more of service to one organisation.

West Australian Volunteers who have undertaken 50 or more years of service

Australian Red Cross

Mrs Heather Booth(Wembley Downs) is a life member of the City Beach Unit. Heather has been an office bearer and assisted with organising many occasions including fundraising events, card and bridge playing days, fashion parades and the street appeal.

Mrs Evelyn Climie(Cranbrook) has contributed through fund raising, helping in times of disaster and helping with families in need anywhere she was required.

Mrs Penelope Ednie-Brown(Kojonup) began knitting squares for Red Cross during the Second World War in 1943 when she was 9 years old. In 1957 she came to Kojonup to start up the Orchid Valley Branch; serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer, then as Zone President.

Mrs Merilyn (Meg) Loveland(Mindarie) met with a group of other young mums in South City Beach to organise lunches, fashion parades and other events to raise money for Red Cross.

Mrs Norma Marwick(Shoalwater Bay) joined the Safety Bay Unit in 1969 after being a member of the Greenhills Branch since around 1940. Norma initially assisted with knitting Khaki wool and continues to be an active volunteer now.

Mrs Joyce McDonald(Busselton) was a Telecross caller and trained in registration for Disaster Relief. She has also been involved with the Busselton shop and was Manager for quite a few years and continues to volunteer at the shop.

Mrs Ethel Schroder (Augusta) made sponge cakes every Saturday for the street stalls in Kalgoorlie. She packed woollens to send overseas during the Second World War, knitted beanies and scarves and crocheted knee rugs for various causes and also helped at the Augusta shop.

Mrs Judith Talbot(Brunswick Junction) was both the Junior and Senior Vice President of the Brunswick Unit, and President for 21 years – a position she still holds. She has also served two terms as Treasurer and Secretary.

Darts Western Australia Inc.

Mrs Betty Hislop(Greenfields) was an instigator in having women including in the then men only association. She has been the State ladies captain for 40 years and is the current State coaching director.

Narrikup Netball Club

Mrs Beryl Determes(Albany) founded the Narrikup Netball Club, is Patron of Narrikup Combined Sports, Life Member of Narrikup Netball Club and the Great Southern Netball Region along with the Albany Netball Association and Netball WA. She has also received the Plantagenet award in the Year of the Child.

Palmyra Rebels Netball Club

Ms Beverly Buswell(Bicton) has had several positions in the club as player, coach, committee member and role model all at once. Bev won many senior A1 premierships playing over 700 games in her 40 year playing career.

Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club Inc.

Mr Peter Hawkins(Sorrento) joined the Port Surf Life Saving Club and gained his bronze medallion in 1960 before transferring to the Scarboro club in the mid 1980's. Peter has been a strong supporter of surf rowing, captaining several crews at both the Leighton and Scarboro clubs.

Mr Brian Morrissey(Duncraig) gained his bronze medallion in 1964 and has maintained 51 years continuous service as a surf lifesaver. Brian's key contribution over those years has been as a rower, coach, captain and mentor of surf boat crews.

Scout Association of Western Australia

Mr Raymond Armstrong(Mt Helena) is the Assistant Group Leader at Eastern Hills Scout Group. His active service as a Leader spans from 1958 to 1965 and from 1971 to the present day.

Soroptimist International

Mrs Tess Passmore(Gosnells) has been an active and productive member of Canning District, including a term as club president from 1987 to 1989. She has supported and encouraged the younger members for future roles within our organisation.

Mrs Ronda Williams (Kalamunda) was a foundation member of Canning District and has held office bearer roles including Club President for 4 years as well as many other Executive positions and has been a delegate to various SW Pacific Conferences.

Southern Districts Netball Association

Mrs Mary Cash(Parkwood) has held a variety of roles in Administration, Coaching, Umpiring, Various Committees, President of Boards, Board Member, State Coach and Development.

St John Ambulance

Mr John EdwardRee(Falcon) joined in 1958 and has since been a Volunteer Ambulance Officer, First Aider and Trainer. He is also involved in the Museum, History Society, Fellowship and Friends of St John groups.

Mr George Williams(Kellerberrin) has been a dedicated officer and still is a committee member attending monthly training regularly.

West Australian volunteers who have undertaken 25 – 49 years of service

Albany Heritage Park

Mr Eric Corrigan(Bayonet Head)has been volunteering in a variety of roles at the Princess Royal Fortress and Albany Heritage Park for 30 years. He has assisted with coordinating tours of the Fortress and grounds, in volunteer rostering and in being an invaluable supporter.

Amaroo Care Services Inc

Mrs Myrtle Bamess(Gosnells) has been volunteering since 1989, putting in years of selfless service to those less fortunate than her and to anyone who could use a helping hand. She is a wonderful lady who stays strong and smiles.

Mrs Margaret Belton(Maddington) has been volunteering since 1991, assisting with bingo twice a week and running a weekly cooking group. She won Volunteer of the Year for the Buckley Caring Centre in 2014.

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA

Mrs Debbie Tunbridge(Helena Valley) has volunteered at the annual Camp Freedom since it began 25 years ago. Debbie, a rheumatology nurse, has provided invaluable support, knowledge and understanding to children with Juvenile Arthritis.

Australian Red Cross

Mrs ValmaiArblaster(Woodlands) has been a member of the Scarborough and Karrinyup branches and is currently a member of the City Beach branch. She has assisted with organising fundraising and promotional events.

Mrs Beryl Armstrong (Bullcreek) joined the Coffee Club around 1978. This progressed to the Kardinya Unit where she served as Secretary for several years. Beryl has assisted with many fundraising activities and she has worked once a week at the Willagee Red Cross shop for the past 15 years.

Mrs Jennifer Bagshaw(Bridgetown) has participated in fundraising and support programs, attended monthly meetings and promoted Red Cross. Jennifer is the Vice President of the Bridgetown Unit and has joined the Emergency Preparedness Team.

Mr Andy Brittain(Dianella) first volunteered in the Stamp Shop in the 1980’s during school holiday periods. When retiring in 2002, Andy started to volunteer one day a week in the stamp shop.

Mrs Kay Brockman (Muradup) joined the Kojonup/Muradup Unit in 1981. Since 1998 she has held the positions of Liaison Officer, Treasurer and was also President for a few years. Kay received a long service medal and two bars for 30 years, and a Service Award in 2011.

Mrs Jacqueline Brothers(Safety Bay)became a member of Peron Coffee Club in approximately 1980. Since then she has assisted with fundraising by rattling tins, selling cakes and working at craft stalls; and assisting mobile and permanent Blood Banks.

Mr Edward Burgess (Greenwood) has volunteered for 30 years assisting with street collections, Red Cross Appeals, the operation of a care centre and also personal transport.

Mrs Julie Burgess(Greenwood) was a junior member in primary school and collected door to door at the age of 10. Julie became a member of the Sorrento Duncraig Unit and assisted with its fundraising activities and care centre. Julie also collects for the March Appeal and Street Appeal.

Mrs Enid Cherry(Balga) joined in 1970. During her 45 years she has helped with catering in the wool sheds for farmers at sheep sales, helped Aboriginal women sewing clothes, ran a patient trolley at Wickham Hospital, door knocking appeals and assisting country accident victims.

Mrs Cecilie Clarke(Australind) has been volunteering for 40 years. She has been a Treasurer and Secretary at times and received a service award in 1998.

Mrs Ruth Coates(Esperance) joined the Esperance branch in the mid-1970's. Ruth has been Branch President, Treasurer, Welfare Officer and a Committee member in this period assisting with fundraising and also volunteering at the local Red Cross shop every week.

Mrs Coralie Cockram(Bridgetown) has been a member of the Bridgetown Unit since 1987. The unit organises fundraising and promotional events. Coralie has a Red Cross long service badge and two bars.

Mrs Barbara Davies(Bridgetown) has volunteered for 43 years. She was President from 2000–2003. She has also assisted with feeding firemen fighting fires, caring for families whose homes were lost in fires, large ANZAC Day morning teas and catering for weddings, funerals and the Bridgetown Show.

Mrs Desolina Deleo(Hamel) has been a member since 1980 and has held the position of President for the Waroona Unit and Leschenault regions at times. Desolina has assisted with a variety of fundraising events including champagne breakfasts and Melbourne Cup lunches.

Mrs Irene June Dowson(Kalgoorlie) joined in the 1970s participating in the annual door knock, street collections and selling raffle tickets. At various times she has been President, Secretary and Treasurer of the unit.

Mrs Roma Earl(Geographe Bay) has been a volunteer in the Busselton branch for 34 years, working for the most part in the local op shop, providing great service to the community.

Ms June Edwards(Collie) has worked in the Collie op shop for years, sold tickets, worked on cake stalls and served afternoon tea at the hospital.

Mrs Myra Eilford(Kardinya) loved the way she was trusted as a volunteer. Myra made many friends since she first started.

Mr Adrian Elder(Bridgetown) has a Long Service medal and two bars. He was presented with a Service Award at the Centenary of the Bridgetown Branch. He has been the only quiz master for 20 years of Bridgetown’s fundraising for the March Appeal.

Mrs Flora Margaret Fehlauer (Northam) collected from farmers as a child from 1940–1945. Later, she was in charge of the Northam Regional Blood Bank for 15 years and she also volunteered in the local Red Cross shop.

Mrs Jeanette Fleay(Geraldton) joined in 1976 and has held a variety of positions for Geraldton and the Charlotte Pond regions. Jeanette is also an Emergency Services Volunteer (Team Leader), a Telecross coordinator and started a Telechat program in Geraldton.

Ms Shirley Flynn(Mullewa) joined in 1967, became a President in 1986 and Regional President in 1990. Shirley taught first aid for many years, assisted with lunches for seniors, sold items, cake stalls, and door knocking appeals. Shirley has been the Liaison Secretary since 2000 for the Mullewa Unit.

Mrs Joan Fry(Brunswick) contributed to Brunswick and surrounding areas. She was the Treasurer of her local branch.

Mrs Joan Green(Innaloo) joined the Heathridge Unit in 1983 and was President for three times over the years. Joan organised lots of fundraising through stalls, served teas at the Hillary’s Blood Bank and doorknocked for the street appeal.

Mrs Maxine Green(Greenwood) joined the Waroona branch on 17th July 1989 whilst living in Yarloop. She collected for the March Appeal over many years. She transferred to the Harvey branch in 2009 and helps with many cake stalls and selling tickets each March.

Mrs Gwen Guinness(Corrigin) has been a member for 45 years. In this time she has been a Welfare Representative, President and Secretary of the unit; assisted with all fundraising activities and worked in the shop assisting with catering and cleaning.

Miss Kathleen Hall (Mount Barker) commenced as a volunteer on the hospital trolley service and assisted weekly for over 36 years.

Mrs Iris Hayward(Northampton) has volunteered for more than 25 years with Red Cross.

Mrs Maureen Hayward (Pinjarra) has volunteered for over 30 years assisting with the hospital trolley, door knocking, and visiting shopping centres and retail outlets for Red Cross Appeal days. She has also assisted with emergency response disasters.

Mrs Patricia Herbert(Manjimup) has been volunteering for 44 years serving in the positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Liaison Officer. Patricia has completed fundraising activities and also run a book trolley at the local hospital.

Ms Jean Doris Honey(Harvey) joined in 1968 and has helped with fundraising during this time. Jean received a 20 year badge in 1983 and has been awarded a third bar for 40 years of service in 2013.

Mrs Rosanne Hughes (Bicton) joined in 1985 and attended Fremantle Hospital weekly distributing library books and magazines to patients in the wards. Rosanne still assists with fund raising activities as required.

Mrs Elaine Hutchings(Toodyay) joined in 1978 and is currently with the Toodyay Unit. She has organised fundraising and promotional events. Elaine received the Long Service Medal and two bars for 30 years of service.

Mrs Jennifer Ireland(Ongerup) has been a member for 42 years and held various office bearer positions during this time as well as being an emergency services volunteer. Jennifer has coordinated many fundraising and community events.

Ms Deborah James(Dalkeith) joined Red Cross in 1971 as a member of the Mount Claremont Unit and held the position of President from 2001–2003. In 2009 she moved to the Bindaring Unit where she works on the one day clothing sale at Claremont Showgrounds which raises funds for Red Cross Services.

Mrs Margaret Johnston(Merredin) has been volunteering for over 30 years. She has coordinated the Annual Door Knock Appeal in Merredin for many years, and has also organised Melbourne Cup luncheons, raffles, garden parties and Fashion Parades.

Mrs JunetteKeane (Menora) has been volunteering for around 30 years. During this time she has spent many interesting and happy days with the organisation.

Mr Robert (Bob) Kelly(Alexander Heights) has served as an Emergency Service/ Disaster Management volunteer since September 1990. Bob served as a volunteer in the conflicts of Somalia, Northern Kenya, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda/Zaire, India and Bougainville (PNG).

Mrs Patricia Kenna(Esperance) has volunteered for 38 years, participating in door knock appeals, cake stalls, Melbourne Cup lunches, and balls. She was a baby capsule and medical loans officer and works at the local Red Cross Shop every Thursday.

Mrs Sheila Kenny(Willagee) has been a member since 1980 in the Kardinya Unit. She volunteered at Fremantle Blood Donor Centre for 34 years. She also volunteered at Willagee Red Cross shop for the past 20 years.

Mrs Shirley Kilpatrick(Broadwater) has volunteered for 33 years, working 24 years in the Busselton shop.She still works there every Tuesday. Shirley was a coordinator of the local Blood Bank for 14 years and Treasurer of their unit for 10 years. Shirley also started with the Hands on Care program in 1991.

Mrs Dymphna Margaret Knight (formerly Porter) (Swan View) first joined the Esperance branch in approximately 1974 and then moved to Perth in 1987 to join the Boya branch. She attended emergency workshops and when health permits she is available for any ongoing emergency call outs.

Mrs Phyllis Leavy(Bentley) joined as a teenager in 1959 and was a member of Carnamah branch for 3 years. After a break she re-joined at Riverton in 1974. In that time she has held every office position, some for several years.

Mrs Kathleen Leggoe(Mt Pleasant) joined 43 years ago and spent 15 years as Director of Tracing at Perth Headquarters. Kathleen has volunteered for Soup Patrol, collected for the Annual Appeal and at the time of Cyclone Tracy spent many hours establishing the Central Registry.

Mr Peter Leggoe(Mt Pleasant) joined in 1972 and holds a Long Service Medal with three bars. He joined the initial Soup Patrol for a number of years, assisted at the Darwin airport at the time of Cyclone Tracy and collected from time to time on annual door knock appeals.

Mrs Margaret Long(Merriwa) has been a member for 37 years. Margaret has assisted with fund raising, doorknocks, beauty therapy, catering, first aid, ‘Safety is No Accident’ school program and the mobile Blood Bank. Margaret received a Service Award in 2009.

Mrs Joan Lorimer (Koongamia) joined on 17th July 1978 and in that time has volunteered at the Red Cross Kiosk at Swan Districts Hospital, assisted with Christmas Gift Wrapping at Myers in Perth, manned the Red Cross Stall at the Royal Show and assisted at the Blood Bank.
