This course focuses on meaningful communication and language as it is used in real-world situations that students are most likely to encounter. Students will continue to learn to use predictable language in familiar settings and begin to not only express basic needs, but elaborate on them. They will continue to develop cultural awareness and the ability to recognize the products, practices, and perspectives of the culture. Students will continue to develop insights into their own language through linguistic and cultural comparisons with the foreign language and culture they study and use the language to expand their knowledge in all content areas.

IPA:
The World Languages department utilizes unit and lesson plans created at the state level to guide daily activities and assessments in the classroom. Our main focuses are the “5 C’s” – Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. The units are designed around a central theme and include specific vocabulary and grammar associated with those themes so that the students will encounter new information in a real-life scenario. Three styles of assessment will be utilized to measure the students’ growing knowledge: Interpretive (Reading or listening activities), Interpersonal (speaking with a partner or small group), and Presentational (written tests, written papers, verbal presentations, etc). An IPA will be given at the end of each unit and will be comprised of these three parts. All three will be averaged together for one test grade and their weights may differentiate according to the instructor’s discretion.

** Textbooks will stay in the classroom. Your child can go on-line to see the textbook at home at with the username: wahsparent and the password: wildcat. However, if would like for your child to have his or her own textbook to take home, please contact Mr. Cumback.**

Reglas:
1) Sit in your assigned seat BEFORE the bell rings.
2) Eliminate ALL side comments and conversations.
3)Use RESPECTFUL language.
4)Remain in the room for the ENTIRE class period.
5)Stay awake and PARTICIPATE!
6)Keep food and drinks OUT of the classroom.
7)Electronics – Turn them OFF and put them AWAY!
Procedimientos:
Before tardy bell rings…
1. Go to the restroom and/or visit your locker.
2. Sharpen your pencil.
3. Put away all drinks and food. There is no eating or drinking in the classroom.
4. Take your assigned seat.
During class…
1. Complete the PDD in your notebook within the first 5 minutes of class.
2. Remain seated unless instructed to do otherwise.
3. Do not speak to your peers during instruction.
4. Raise your hand to be recognized.
5. Get into small groups or with partners quickly and quietly.
6. No bathroom or locker passes. (You have 5 minutes between classes. Use the restroom and go to your locker during that time.)
End of class…
1. Gather all trash around your desk.
2. Stay seated in your desk.
3. Leave when I say “Adíos!”
4. On your way out, throw away your trash.
Trabajoperdido o tarde:
According to school policy, students have 5 days to make up missed assignments due to absence. It is the student’s responsibility to get missed notes and makeup assignments when class is missed. At the front of the class is a binder labeled for this class in which a student can find all missing work. If a student is not present on a day homework is checked, then a grade of 0 will be put in the book until the student has proven he/she has done the assignment.
All assignments are due on their due date given by the teacher. If an assignment is turned in 1 day late, 10 points will be deducted from the score. Furthermore, if an assignment is turned in without a name on it, it will be placed in a folder at the front of the room and will also have 10 points deducted for lateness.
If the assignment is not turned in within 1 day of the due date, the assignment will be given a score of zero with no opportunities for makeup.
Ayuda:
The instructor can be available for help/tutoring outside of class with a 24 hour request from the student. The instructor is available most days after school with the exception of Friday due to an after school job.
In order to request outside help, the student must demonstrate effort in class. Tutoring is a privilege for students who take good notes and complete all assignments but still struggle with a concept and need one-on-one help. If a student requests help who has not demonstrated effort in class, he/she will be denied tutoring. For any language teacher in the department with his/her credential an average private lesson will cost from $20-$35 an hour. You as a student value your time and so don’t we.
If your schedule or your child’s schedule conflicts with mine, please contact me and we can work something out to get your child the help s/he needs.

Examenes y pruebas:
As already aforementioned the final assessment for each unit will be a task. However, this is at the discretion of the instructor to change as he sees fit. Students will also have tests and quizzes. Furthermore, expect to have some sort of homework assignment each night. Each week students will receive a vocabulary list that they will have to translate from English to Spanish. On that same quiz students will have a grammar structure to remember and lastly a passage to which they will have to answer questions. Students will receive this list on Monday and will then quiz on Friday. Moreover, this may mean that students will have to study for two quizzes on the same day. Lastly, students should expect to have some sort of assessment either quiz or in class project every 2-3 days.
Final Exam Exemption Policy as per administration of West Ashley High School: The instructor may exempt from examination only students enrolled in courses earning a full Carnegie unit from both first and second semesters for high school diploma credit, who have an average of 93 or above for second semester course and who have no unexcused or unlawful absences.
Comunicación
Currently, CCSD’s grade book system – PowerSchool - permits parents and students to log-on and get real-time information regarding their student’s progress and attendance through parent portal. Feel free to check the gradebook as often as you like and contact the instructor with any questions or concerns. The system does not allow teachers to e-mail progress reports to the parents or students. Parent conferences can be made via the guidance department. Conferences are scheduled for Tuesdays immediately after school and Thursdays after report card distribution. I also offer office hours on Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30. If these hours are not possible, please feel free to make an appointment with the instructor. In order to access parent portal please email the following information to :
- Student’s full legal name – the name as it appears on his/her birth certificate
- Parent/Gaurdian’s full legal name
- Current address
- Best day-time contact phone number for parent/guardian
- The last 4 digits of student’s Social Security Number
- The last four digits of a parent/guardian/backup phone number that the school (WAHS) has on file.
- If a parent or guardian already has an account for another student at another school, please provide that information so that the account can access multiple students.
Once this information is received and verified, an email will be sent providing the username and password to the account, a live link to the Parent Portal Website, and information on how to access and maximize the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Cheating:
Any student found or suspected of cheating will be given a zero for that assignment. This includes and is not limited to:
-Use of translation sites
- For example, Google translate
-Asking a native speaker for translations and how to say statements/having native speakers complete assignments or do revisions of student’s work.
- Speaking with native speaker is great practice; however, remember that you are at the beginning stages of learning a language. Therefore, KEEP EVERYTHING SIMPLE!!!
-Using other students work
- For example, taking students work from a previous semester or copying homework at the beginning of class.
Retake Policy:
Students are permitted to retake assessments (quizzes and tests not projects); however, they must appeal to the instructor. The steps are the following:
- Complete appeal form located at the front of the classroom.
- Answer these questions in a formal business letter
- What did you do to study and prepare for this assessment?
- What should I have done?
- What will I do in the future?
- Why should I be granted a second chance?
- Your letter MUST be written in blue or black ink, in pencil or typed. NO EXCEPTIONS
- Correct the quiz or test.
- Quizzes and tests will be kept by the instructor. Students must come in on their own time to correct these assessments meaning before school, after school, during lunch, or during second period with the instructor of that period’s permission. For example, if I were to have Mrs. T second period and there was idle time and wanted to correct my test, I would need a signed note from Mrs. T permitting me to come to Mr. Hill and correct my test during second period.
- Staple the corrected test to the appeal form and turn into the black box in the back of the room.
- These appeals must be turned in within 2 weeks of the date administered NO EXCEPTIONS!
- If the appeal is granted, it is the student’s responsibility to schedule an appointment with the instructor to retake the assessment
The purpose of this policy is to have students take ownership of their grades and realize that there are consequences but also second chances for their actions, and to afford them opportunity to learn from these actions. However, in order to be awarded a second chance, they have to prove that they are worthy, and remember that, as in life, not every appeal will be granted and the second assessment may be different from the first.
Accommodations
Accommodations will be provided and followed as they are written via a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 plan. Please contact Ms. Simonsen for questions concerning IEPs and Mr. Benton concerning 504 plans.
Rewards
Students will receive rewards through a Euro system that I have created. Euros can be earned through good behavior, progress, and what I call Euro challenges. These Euros can be cashed in for the following:
25 € = Homework pass
5 € = Extra point on a quiz
10 € = Extra point on a test
75 € = 0 on quiz turns into 100 (Student must be absent for this have occurred)
Euros can also be used to monitor other behavior in class.
Students can also receive rewards on candy through dulce challenges. These challenges consist of a number of questions and if a student is able to get a certain amount correct, he/she will receive his/her prize.
There is also a student of the week whom I call my A-Lister of the week. The recipient is awarded a homework pass. To receive the award , a student must exhibit wildcat pride through grades, performance, progress, etc.
Recuerdense:
Please note that if a student is not interested in Spanish II, it is not a requirement for graduation. However, if a student wishes to attend a four year institution, a minimum of two years of a consecutive language will be required (preferably 3), but no language credit is required for admission at a two year college such as Trident Tech. Please see your guidance counselor if you would like to take another course. Students have five days from today’s date to register in another course and that deadline is August 29th.
