Wellington Collegians, Club Development Officer / Playing Senior Coach

Background to the position

The Wellington Collegians Cricket Club is seeking a Club Development Officer and Playing Senior Coach. This role is co-funded by Cricket Wellington as part of the “One-Club” programme asa mechanism to ensure the ongoing growth and administrative sustainability of grass roots cricket in the Wellington region. At Wellington Collegians, the tasks of the Club Development Officer have been expanded to include leading roles as the Club’s junior coach and playing head coach of the Club’s senior squad. The Playing Senior Coach will be available for hire for personalised tuition and is expected to grow a portfolio of external contracts to schools and individuals.This is a full-time and permanent position, which will be reviewedseasonally based on performance.

Background to the club

The Wellington Collegians Cricket Club is New Zealand’s oldest club; in its various incarnations, the Club has been an integral part of Wellington cricket and the wider sporting community since 1853. Collegians is Wellington’s leading inner-city cricket club. It has always welcomed cricketers from all walks of life, and the makeup of its playing teams and administration reflects a diverse mix of races, ages, occupations and social backgrounds.

The Club provides a high quality sporting and social environment for cricketers at all levels, comprised of well over 200 junior players, two women’s teams and 11 senior men’s teams. The cornerstone of quality learning experiences across all ages and skill levels is high quality coaching. The Club Development Officer / Playing Senior Coach will take a leading role in developing and executing coaching plans, working with players and coaches across the entire Club.

Employee Specifications

Work Experience:

Experience as a coach and player to highest levels of Club cricket essential. Provincial or representative-level experience would be desirable, as would any history working with emerging elite-level cricketers. Previous experience executing community cricket initiatives would be desirable, along with previous experience coaching at schools. Demonstrated administrative skills and a history of self-management are essential.

  • Knowledge of the structure and operations of cricket
  • Experience of the education sector (particularly primary school)
  • Ability to manage large learning groups (such as a class of school children)

  • Understanding of how cricket clubs’ programmes operate
  • Firm knowledge and understanding of current cricket development principles
  • An appreciation of the challenges and opportunities impacting cricket
  • Understanding the needs of clients and an awareness of how to grow new commercial opportunities

Office skills

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Products
  • Ability to operate an appointments diaryand timesheet
  • Competent in the use of online social media
  • Knowledge of office procedures and organisation
  • Maintains a high degree of accuracy in drafting and reviewing documents, and providing information

Commercial skills

  • Knowledgeable in current and possible future policies, practices, trends and technologies
  • Ability to identify areas of synergy within the club, and how these are best effected
  • Ability to manage the resources of the club (financial and other) to achieve targeted results
  • Ability to seek new areas of outsourced funding and engage with commercial clients

General managerial abilities

  • Punctual and ability to structure own day, manage workload and meet deadlines
  • Participates actively in team and organisational discussions and decision-making
  • Ability to influence others, with negotiation, partnering and team building skills
  • Contributes to club planning

Qualifications:

  • Current Driver’s License and access to a vehicle
  • Must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
  • Qualifications in either sport administration, or a sports-related discipline, or education, is desirable
  • New Zealand Cricket Level 2 or 3Coaching Qualification (or its international equivalent)
