Welcome wonderful vocabulary students!

This semester you will have the opportunity to learn and practice your academic English vocabulary through many interesting reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.

Because we don't have a "regular" class, you will need to do all the hours of class work AND all the hours of homework independently. This takes a lot of effort for a student; most students think that it is more difficult than being in a face-to-face class.

GETTING STARTED

You will need your textbook, Focus on Vocabulary 1, by Schmitt, Schmitt, and Mann (ISBN 978-0-13-137619-9). You can purchase this either online or in the CPCC bookstore on Central Campus. For students whose books may arrive a little late, the first reading from Chapter 1 is available on our Academic Vocabulary website:

If you have never used Moodle before, you will need to learn how to use it.
There is a tutorial on the right side of the page, "Moodle 2 Essential Training for Students."

If you have trouble understanding the tutorial, you can also get help by going to the Language Lab (Central Campus, LT Building, Room 1144) or by calling or emailing the CPCC ITS Helpdesk:

ORGANIZING YOUR SCHEDULE

Start by organizing your schedule very well. Since all of us have unexpected events in our lives, it is a good idea to get all your class work finished EARLY in the week. That way, if something is unclear, or you have a problem with computer software, you will still have time to fix the situation before your work needs to be finished. There will NOT be a possibility of turning work in late. (Research shows that when teachers allow this, a higher percentage of students fail to finish the course.) If you miss a deadline, just keep going on the work for the next chapter.

Work for the course will be open from the beginning of the week, and you will always have the opportunity to work on lessons starting each Monday, but NOT after the assignment is due (on Sunday). Working ahead will give you more control over your learning.

Be sure to check your CPCC email EVERY DAY.

SUCCESS

An online class requires a lot of dedication by the student. There are several important keys to being successful in an online class:
- Make sure you have all your materials and understand how to use the technology (see above for ways to get help)
- Organize your time and your work very well
- Get your work done early; this leavesextra time to get help in case of a problem
- Contact your teacher or the Language Lab right away (don't wait!) when something is not clear

GOOD LUCK, I HOPE WE ALL HAVE A REALLY GOOD SEMESTER TOGETHER.
