Dear Parents,September 6, 2016

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I am so excited about being your child’s 4th grade teacher. This letter is to introduce myself to you and explain a little about the papers that you will be receiving from me today.

This year will be my 19th year as a teacher! I started my teaching career in Maryland after graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in both Elementary and Special Education. I taught two years as the Resource Room teacher and then the next seven years as both a 3rd and 4th grade general education teacher. After finishing my Masters degree in Special Education, my family and I moved to Michigan, returning to my husband’s hometown. I started teaching at Cleveland Elementary as the Resource Room Teacher in 2007 and have been in the school every since! This is my third year teaching 4th grade at Cleveland and I am so excited to have a wonderful year with your child!

I have three children who keep me very busy! Owen is 12 and is in the 7th grade, Brody is 9 and is the 4th grade, and my youngest is Addison who is 6and she is in 1st grade! My husband works for the Michigan Jaguars, a soccer club based out of Novi, Michigan. We all love to play soccer and do other sports, as well as go swimming and play with our dog Lilly!

Today, you will be getting a few forms that I need to have returned as soon as possible. Email is the best way to get in touch with me, as it is very difficult to get to phone calls during the day. Due to my husbands work schedule and the young age of my children, I do have to leave pretty quickly after school. I typically arrive at school by 7:15-7:30 and have to leave around 4:15. However, if there is ever a time that you need to meet, please do not hesitate to let me know and we can set up a meeting after school. I just need to know in advance so that I can make arrangements at home.

Thank you in advance for all of the work that you do for your child everyday. I know that it is not easy and I appreciate all of the help you are going to give them during their 4th grad year! I look forward to meeting with you and again, if you have any questions, please let me know!

Sincerely,

Katie Emert

Planner Information

Today, your child received a RED planner that he/she will be using for the school year to record homework and what we have done during the day. It is very important that you review and sign the planner each and every night. This is a wonderful way for us to communicate! If there is something I need to know or you have a quick question, please feel free to write a quick note in the planner. I check the planners every morning and will initial the page if there is a parent signature. If there is not, I will put a circle on the page. The students receive tickets for their planners being signed every night!

The students will be writing and highlighting their homework in the various areas. The information that is not highlighted is what activity we completed that day. ONLY the information highlighted will have to be completed for homework.
