Welcome to St. Olav videregående skole 2017 - 2018

It is our pleasure to welcome you as a student to the IB Diploma Programme at St. Olav vgs. We are a community of active, high achieving students and we very much hope that you will become involved in the life of the school to contribute towards a positive school environment with high academic standards.

School starts on Thursday August 17th at 11:00 You should meet up in the school gymhall where the rector, Mats Bryne, will welcome all vg2 students and deliver information about the school. Thereafter, you will meet the IBDP Coordinator, Fiona Andvik who will introduce you to the IB Programme before then being assigned to your personal tutor groups. The remainder of the day will be spent with your personal tutor going through important information regarding the school and life as a student at St. Olav vgs. Booklists for subjects in groups 1 and 2 will be distributed after school starts,

textbooks for groups 3, 4 and 5 subjects can be loaned from the school library. Subject teachers will guide you through this once classes start. Check the school website for any further information.

Lockers are available in school; they cost kr. 100,- and you must supply your own lock. You are expected – by the local education authority and the school - to have your own laptop which should be available for your own use from the start of the school year and brought to all classes. It is not acceptable to use your mobile phone as a replacement.

At various times in the school year, you may be asked to buy theatre and/or cinema tickets to shows deemed relevant to your studies. You are expected to pay for these yourself (see above grant) and to attend all such performances/shows as required by your subject teacher(s). In addition, you should purchase general equipment for your studies, such as folders, writing materials, and calculators. A grant is available from Statens Lånekasse towards the cost of such materials. Please do not purchase a calculator until you have checked with your IB Mathematics teacher to ensure the model is permitted by the IBO for IB examinations. There are strict rules around the use of calculators in IB examinations and should you have an unapproved model, you would not be allowed to use this in the final IB exams. There is a non-means tested stipend available from Lånekassen which can help offset these costs. More information on this will be given at the start of school or is available at www.rogfk.no/itskole in addition to the school’s website www.st-olav.vgs.no.

Should you plan to use the bus and/or train as transport to school, please ensure you purchase the young persons card, Ungdomskort, in good time before school starts. You can find more information on this in English on the Kolumbus website: http://www.kolumbus.no/en.

Other relevant information will be published on the school’s website and/or given when school starts.

We look forward to meeting you in August to St. Olav vgs and welcoming you to the IB Diploma Programme.

Best regards,

Mats Bryne Fiona Andvik
