Carbon fiber – bug wiper

Why carbon fiberbug wipers ?

  • carbon bug wipers are more resistant against twist and distortion
  • carbon composite islight
  • UV-resistant
  • built in spring is made out of stainless steel
  • incorporated steel plate for increased strength and stability
  • carbon bug wipers are non-corroding and rust-proof
  • parts are tempered and therefore of stable form
  • carbon wipers are not painted(naturally black)

BWS-BASIC

Don’t forget to check your bug wiper device before the next season. Especially, take care of the following items:

  • check wear of retrieve cable e.g. worn out parts, kinks, damaged plastic coating, broken strains etc.
  • bearing of manual reels might need some drops of oil.

Some hints about the plastic coated stranded steel retrieve cable:

  • The retrieve cable has a tensile strength of about 30 lb (15 kp).

Attention:

During normal operation the retrieve cable will be loaded up to 4 kp (e.g. at 115 km/h) .

If you let the bug wiper run unchecked until wing tip, unwinding the cable freely, it will be stopped there in an abrupt manner, tensioning the cable to an high extent, much more than at normal operation and slow brake down.

The cable will inevitably brake in this case.

  • Fastening of the plastic coated retrieve cable to the manual reel

Push the retrieve cable from outside the glider through the fuselage and the bowden wire until it appears at the manual reel. Take it, push it through the right hole of the manual reel and form a big loop. According to the figure down below wind now the end of the cable once around the bridge between the two holes, twist itaround the adjacent part of the cable to which you bond it by melting the plastic coating with the flame of a cigarette lighter. Melt the plastic only, do not burn it otherwise the bonding won’t work.

After finishing the loop tighten the cable by pulling it from outside the fuselage.

Pull out the cable completely, draw it towards the wing tip, shorten it according to the figures down below and make the fastening loop for the bug wiper.

Cutting the retrieval cable to length

Draw the cable to the wing tip and keep it under tension. Cut now the retrieval cable in such a manner that the cable end does not reach beyond the wing tip - or the BUG WIPER when attached to the cable can not come closer to the wing tip more than approximately 20 cm.

Forming a loop at the end of the retrieval cable.

To be able to secure the retrieval cable to the BUG WIPER a loop has to be made at the end of the cable. For this purpose form a loop, twist it and fix it by melting the coating togetherwith the aid of a pocket lighter.

Take care that the plastic melts only and does not burn. Otherwise the fixing won’t work.

Twist the cable and fix the loop by melting the plastic coating with a flame.

Now hook the cable to the bug wiper and - keeping the cable tensioned by a helper - draw it to the fuselage by turning the manual reels.
