SLE of the Month

A St. Louise Student is… a well-balanced individual who sets goals and implements steps to achieve them.

Welcome to Mrs. Bannick’s Math Class!

It has been great getting to know the students in these first few weeks and it was so nice to meet many of you on our curriculum nights. If you didn’t get a chance to stop by the classroom, the math room is located in the north wing of the original school. Please feel free to stop in and say hello.

I am looking forward to a great year of learning, exploration and, of course, fun in math with your children. Our curriculum for 6th -8th grades provide our students with clear straightforward instruction in concepts and skills with relevant real-life applications. All students have been assigned usernames and passwords for the online books. There is lots of extra practice and resources available online for the students to use.

Fifth Grade Math

In fifth grade we have just finished chapter one with a review of the place value system. We reviewed place value of whole numbers and decimals, writing the various forms of the numbers as well as comparing and ordering whole numbers and decimals. We will continue to review and work with place value. We are currently working through chapter 2 with adding and subtracting decimals.

On Tuesday mornings, beginning October 3rd we will start before school tutoring for 5th grade. This is a great opportunity for students to come in for extra help and practice. We begin at 7:45 and finish up at 8:15. I will send out a reminder email each Monday. All are welcome.

Sixth Grade Math

In these first few weeks we have been working through chapters 1 & 3 of the red book with operations, properties and decimals. We reviewed long division, properties, order of operations and decimal operations. These concepts will build the foundation of our study this year. Next up we will return to our blue book and begin our study of basic algebraic reasoning in which we will study variables and expressions. We will also continue to work on lots of review and computation practice to improve accuracy and fluency.

Seventh Grade Math

In pre-algebra we are just finishing chapter 5 and our study of geometric relationships. We have reviewed some of the basic geometry terms and concepts covered in previous years and learned about line and angle relationships and transformations on the coordinate plane. Our chapter 5 test will be on Friday, September 30th. Next up will return to the pre-algebra book and start in on chapter one withreviewing variables, expressions and integers. The algebra concepts learned in this chapter will be the foundation for our learning throughout the year. We will also review integer operations and concepts. Understanding and mastering integer calculations and the coordinate plane is key to the study of algebra.

Eighth Grade Math

We have just finished chapter 5 of the 8th grade math book with a review of geometric relationships. Students had the opportunity to learn and understand the basics of how a video game is made by making transformations of geometric figures on the coordinate plane. Next up we will return to the Algebra book with our study of expressions, equations and functions. Chapter 1 focuses on the basics of algebra and will be the foundation of our study this year. In addition to algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities we will review order of operations and represent functions in tables and graphs. Problem solving will be emphasized throughout each chapter. Ask your students about the “Cupcake Challenge” problem!

The 8th graders will have a chance to participate in the upcoming “Math Games” competition at Seattle Prep on Saturday October 22nd. Field trip forms were sent home this week. Stay tuned for more details.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for reading and blessings to all as we begin our new year!
