Welcome to English 10 Honors!

This year’s summer reading requirement is the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. You will either need to purchase the novel or check it out at one of the libraries. There are many really inexpensive copies available on Amazon or Half.com. I encourage you to group together and save on the shipping costs if you choose to order online.

While I know summer is a time to rest and take advantage of the plethora of opportunities that are available to enhance your education, I also believe you need to keep your literary thoughts going.

The journal, packet, and essayare what you will turn into me between August 1 and the 13th. I will accept nothing before the 1st and nothing after the 13th at 12:00 pm.There will be a box in the main office at PerryHigh School for English 10H summer work. I attempted to anticipate many of your questions when I presented you with the requirements during class. However, if you have questions as you are doing the summer work, please email me at . The assignments will also be available on the class website: Look under the 10H tab on the right hand column.

The journaling, packet, and essay will be the first grade of the nine weeks. This means I expect the work to be YOUR OWN. We will have many opportunities to discuss the book, so I ask that you do not work together on the requirements. I would like to see your thoughts;I want to see what you are capable of doing. Having said that, I also expect as Honors students you do not consult the internet for answers to the pages that ask for your ideas (journaling and the essay). If your answers come from internet sources, you may be removed from the Honors course. The best way to prevent this is just to avoid internet use. However, you will need to access the internet for the map and vocabulary section; this is expected.

Please understand that if your summer reading is not turned in on or before August 13 or if the work submitted is not Honors quality, you will be automatically reassigned to

English 10 CP. Calls home concerning reassignment will only be made if the work is not Honors quality; no calls will be made if work is not submitted.

I look forward to an exciting and challenging year together!
