V8 Register - MG Car Club

Welcome to the V8 Register!

I am pleased to hear from you and confirm your vehicle details have been entered on the V8 Register. Please use one of the attached forms to update or complete your registration.. If you need information on joining the MG Car Club, do let me know.

The V8 Register is the leading specialist group for MGV8 enthusiasts covering not only the Abingdon built MGBGTV8 model, but also the rapidly growing number of MGBV8 conversions and the earlier Costello MGBV8s. Of course we also welcome the more recent and very popular MG RV8 model. We are frequently asked do we welcome MGBV8 conversions and our clear response is an enthusiastic “Yes!”.

The activities of the V8 Register are essentially twofold - technical and social. From its formation in 1978, the V8 Register has actively encouraged technical contributions from members with maintenance and servicing tips, technical notes and news of spares availability. Many of these contributions have been published in the monthly magazine of the MG Car Club, Safety Fast!, and they have also been compiled as six volumes in a successful series called V8 Workshop Notes. A new series of RV8 Workshop Notes has now been produced and is available from Victor Smith by e-mail as an attached file in Word97. On the social side, the V8 Register has a number of gatherings and events each year which are generally held at MG Car Club events. Full details of the calendar of events are published in the monthly column in Safety Fast!

The principal channel for communications is through the V8 Register’s monthly column and periodic newsletters in Safety Fast! produced by the V8 Register Scribe. Do not hesitate to call the Scribe with any news items, photographs, ideas or contributions for the column or newsletter. The contacts are published in the V8 Register column from time to time. We very rarely have separate mailings to our members because of the high production and mailing costs.

The style and approach of the V8 Register has, from its formation in 1978, been to create a friendly network of fellow MGV8 enthusiasts and to encourage contributions for the regular column and our publications. The key feature of the V8 Register is that it is a voluntary part time organisation which relies on its members contributing whatever they can or feel able to do. The V8 Register is also a democratic body - each year the whole of the Committee stands down and candidates stand for election at the AGM held in the V8 Register marquee on the Sunday of the MG Car Club’s International MG Weekend at Silverstone in June. The V8 Register traditionally has a marquee at the Silverstone weekend meeting with a warm reception inside and protection from the cold winds that can blow across that plateau - even in June! Another traditional annual event has been the popular visit to the 24 heures du Mans sports car race by a party of V8 Register enthusiasts in mid June. If you are thinking of going, then you will need to see RV8 Workshop Note 49 for some planning tips.

Now one final administrative point. If you have not confirmed your wishes as to the publication of your name, telephone number and details of your MGV8, please let the V8 Registrar know because we take considerable care to observe each member’s wishes over the release of personal information held by the V8 Register. This is not only a common courtesy we have followed since the formation of the V8 Register, but now a requirement of the Data Protection Act.

V8 Register

From its formation in October 1978, the V8 Register has been an active group of MGBV8 enthusiasts, keen on maintaining and enjoying the popular V8 powered example of the MG marque. The V8 Register welcomes all enthusiasts for the V8 powered MG models covering the recent MG RV8 Roadster, the increasing numbers of MGBV8 Conversions, MGBV8 Costellos and of course the original factory produced MGBGTV8 model.

The MG RV8 is proving a popular model and the number of new MG RV8 enthusiasts who have joined the V8 Register has reached around 75% of the RV8 models in the UK. Over the last two years, the flow of new registrations has been boosted by reimports of MG RV8s originally exported to Japan. It is clear that MG RV8s are increasingly reaching enthusiasts' hands as examples of the model are traded in the second hand market.

The key strengths of the V8 Register are:

  • Workshop Notes - two series of workshop notes are available, the

original series for the MGBV8, now into a sixth volume, and the recently launched series for the MG RV8, already into the third volume.

  • V8 Lifeline, an enthusiastic band of V8 specialists and motor factors providing spares and maintenance services for the MGBV8 and MR RV8 models.
  • Gatherings of MGV8 enthusiasts and events organised by the V8 Register each year at MG Car Club meetings, particularly at the Club’s annual International MG Meeting at Silverstone in June, tours of Scotland and elsewhere and visits to the 24 hour sports car endurance race at le Mans.

With these strengths and essential support, the V8 Register has become recognised as the specialist group any MGBV8 or MG RV8 enthusiast needs to join.
