WELCOME AND UPDATE

At our last meeting wewelcomedour members, old and new, a post retirement ‘rejuvenated’Dr. Kim Harrison! and guest speaker Marie-Claire Oliver, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Dietician, from The Grove. We were also pleased to again see Peter Clement, the late Oswain Clement’s son who some of us ‘older’ members will recall has, through running, fund raisedfor Pulmonary Fibrosis research. Now also, a part time running mentor to our very own Fran George.

DR. KIM HARRISON REPLACEMENT UPDATE

A new doctor, Dr. Dyer, had been recruited, initially as a locum by the Health Board and indeed a few of our members had already seen him. The feedback was positive and it was hoped that the appointment might become permanent. All we can do is give each other Support Group feedback about developments at the hospital and be

prepared to follow up with the Health Board senior management if need be.

GUEST SPEAKER MARIE-CLAIRE OLIVER PULMONARY REHABILITATION DIETICIAN

We were pleased to welcome Marie-Claire again, to talk about her work as a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Dietician at The Grove.

Marie-Claire was pleased to have been given funding by a Pharmaceutical company to educate people about Malnutrition and Pulmonary Fibrosis. She spoke of nutrition versus malnutrition and explained you can look physically okay as aPulmonary Fibrosisbut still be lacking in vital nutrients due to eating the wrong foods and also by losing muscle mass.

It is important to get the right amount of vitamins each day and Marie-Claire gave us a light-hearted quiz on the vitamin C content in a range of vegetables and fruits. We also were given a piece of Guava to taste and which has a high vitamin C content. The jury was out on the taste compared to a dish of strawberries! Discussions on body mass and obesity also followed, showing how understanding health factors is so important. Well done Marie-Claire for obtaining this funding and we hope to see you again for further updates on this important area of research work.

I have recently moved home to Llanelli and fall under Hywel Dda Health Board. So, after some 3 years I have decided to step down after our July meeting (no meeting in August for Summer holidays!) so we need a new volunteer or two to help administer the group.
