Math Department Meeting Agenda
November 3, 2016 12:30-1:20 AS Conference Room

WELCOME AND INFORMATION ITEMS (5 min)

  1. Statistics Gathering Friday December 2nd 1:00– Save the date!
  1. Math Center Update: The job description to hire for Anne’s position was to go out for internal candidates on Friday 10/28.
  1. Math 106 and 108 Book Review: Shawna has been gathering books for review. If you have any you want considered or want to take a look at any to give feedback, please let her know. Once the field is narrowed down to a handful of options, we’ll do a more formal review in the spring, tentatively planning to adopt for Fall 2017.
  1. Goal 3: Be sure to read the update on the last page! Send any comments or concerns to Ksenia or Shawna.
  1. Math Center Tutors: The Math Center is currently recruiting tutors for next semester. We particularly need statistics tutors! Please refer students you think would make good tutors to the Testing Center. We will follow up with a flyer in your mail boxes next week to pass out to students you recommend.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

  1. New HSI STEM Grant(5 min)

The district is interested in going out for another HSI STEM Grant. Popular ideas these days include student research components, learning community type pipeline projects (students meet GPA and attendance requirements and get priority registration and books paid for etc). What do we want?

  1. Math 90 Degree Applicability (4 min)

The last time we discussed this (5/5/16) we decided that Shawna would gather information on how many students this would impact (see attachment) and Mike would solicit feedback from our articulation officer and others who may know of objections. Next steps?

  1. Should Linear Algebra and Differential Equations be recommended as co-requisites? (4 min)
Currently students who are ‘off track’ often take Linear Algebra after Cac II. While those ‘on track’ are more likely to take both Linear and DifEQ after Calc III. Do we want to make a formal recommendation as a department (it would be listed in the COR)?
  1. Non-Credit Math Options (4 min)

Mike recently attended a curriculum workshop where he learned about new CDCP enhanced funding options.

  1. HSI Grant Update (4 min)
  1. SME Update (4 min)
  1. Deep Dive – Math 121 (15 min)

Please see attached Topic List, and COR. Bring copies of anything you may want to have to facilitate our discussion (schedules, exams, books, etc.)

Department Set Goals for 2016/17

Goal 1: Develop a subject/topic/chapter/section guide for required coverage for all math classes for all math instructors to follow.
PROGRESS: On going

Goal 2: Develop and implement an Assessment Plan Cycle that allows for COR revision, and book review. Our plan will include a timeframe appropriate for our department and details on how we will facilitate and stay on track
PROGRESS: Done

Goal 3: Develop a student centered plan for our Math Center, including options for distance and evening students.
PROGRESS: Asking for Math Center Faculty Coordinator. Ksenia took this to the BSI committee who were in full support! The most likely possibility right now would be a temporary position to research our options, develop a model, and write the job description for a long term position.

Goal 4: Evaluate and discuss success numbers, not as individual classes, but the progression from class to class. We need to be sure that we are passing students who can be successful in their next math class.

PROGRESS: Robyn is working on gathering data for this so we can hold our discussions in early spring.

Goal 5: Hire more full time faculty.

PROGRESS: We are currently scheduled to get one new hire for Fall 2017. As soon as available, the job announcement and supplemental questions will be distributed to tenured faculty for review.
