WEEKLY REPORT 20 DECEMBER TO 26 DECEMBER 2010

Mohmand agency:

On 23 December, A man was killed and three others were injured in a roadside bomb blast in Safi Tehsil of Mohmand Agency. According to local sources, the explosive device went off in ZiaratChowk of Safi Tehsil and destroyed the jeep of a local marble contractor. They said that Irshad was killed while Haider Zaman, Zahir Shah and Hazrat Ali were seriously injured in the blast.

On 24 December, Members of the civil society organizations from Mohmand and South Waziristan agencies have expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the tribal regions and lack of government commitment to pay attention to implement political reforms in FATA. The event was organized by Community Appraisal and Motivation Program (CAMP) under the Communities for Change Project and sponsored by the British High Commission and German Embassy.

On 24 December, At least three soldiers embraced martyrdom and 24 militants were killed in gunfights in Mohmand after about 150 militants attacked paramilitary check points, Local officials said."About 150 Taliban militants attacked five Frontier Corps (FC) check posts in Baidnami village near the border with Afghanistan," a senior security official said."The attack was repulsed leaving 24 militants dead and three of our men (paramilitary soldiers) embraced martyrdom," the official said. '12 security men also receive injuries in the clash.’ Local administration officials and paramilitary force confirmed the attack and casualties.

On 24 December, Scores of security personnel have gone missing whereas three sustained injuries after unidentified militants launched an attack on Ziarat check post located in Balazaiteshil of Mohmand Agency. According to details, insurgents resorted to heavy machinery to carry out a highly improvised attack on a Ziarat check post, which ended in leaving three security soldiers injured while scores others have gone missing. Militants have gained control over said check post, Official sources confirmed.

On 25 December, Taliban militants attacked five checkpoints in the troubled Mohmand Agency, sparking a clash which left 11 paramilitary soldiers and 24 attackers dead.

On 26 December, Sixteen more militants were killed and 20 others sustained injuries when gunship helicopters shelled different areas in Safi and BaizaiTehsils in Mohmand Agency, local official sources said. According to local official sources, 40 militants have now been killed and 32 injured in the last two days as security forces launched retaliatory strikes after scores of fighters attacked five military posts in Safi and Baizai subdivisions.

North Waziristan Agency:

On 20 December 2010, Twenty-three members of the Mehsud tribal Jirga were abducted from North Waziriztan Agency, Local sources said. The sources said the tribesmen were abducted from the Muhajir Bazaar of the Razmak area.

South Waziristan:

On 24 December, Local officials said that a wanted Taliban commander had been killed in fighting with security forces in the Tribal Areas bordering Afghanistan. “AsmatullahBhetani was killed in a gunfight with security forces in South Waziristan on the night between December 7 and 8,” a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Another Local official confirmed Bhetani’s death, saying there had been a reward of Rs 10 million for his arrest.

Khyber Agency:

On 20 December, Security forces seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including 89 missiles,31 rockets, 2 LMGs and thousands of cartridges during a successful raid in Akakhel in the Khyber Agency, and arrested four terrorists, Colonel Sadiq of the Frontier Corps (FC) told the media at the FC Fort Shahkus on Sunday.

On 20 December, the driver and conductor of a NATO oil tanker were injured when unidentified motorcyclists fired at them near SoorKamarJamrud on Saturday night.

On 20 December, the dreaded and most wanted Swati Taliban commander, IbneAmin, was reportedly among the militants killed in the US drone strike in Khyber Agency’s Tirah valley.
A senior commander of the MangalBagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam told that IbneAmin was killed along with six other militants who were his bodyguards when the missiles fired by the drone hit his vehicle.

On 21 December, They attacked the tankers at KataKushta in Jamrudtehsil on the main Peshawar-Torkhum Road at around 9:30am by firing two rockets from the nearby hilltops. The Prang Sam security checkpoint is also situated in the area.The rockets hit two oil tankers, which immediately caught fire. Both the tankers were completely destroyed.A militant group Mujahideen Islam Buraq group claimed responsibility for the rocket attack and warned that more such attacks would be carried out if supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan were not suspended.

On 22 December, Ten persons were arrested in connection with the attack on a Nato oil tanker in Landikotal Tehsil the sources said the tribesmen belonging to Sadukhel, a sub-tribe of Zekhakhel tribe, were apprehended under the Collective Responsibility Clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR). Meanwhile, three personnel of the tribal Khass-adar force were arrested on charges of being absent from their duties. The Assistant Political Agent visited Sadukhel where the Nato supply vehicles were attacked the other day. He expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the Khassadar force manning a check post in the area.

On 22 December, Militants beheaded a man on spying charges and dumped his body in the NalaKhwar area of Bara Tehsil, Khyber Agency. The sources said the body was found in NalaKhwar area while the head was recovered from the Dogra area of Bara Tehsil.

On 22 December, The house of militant commander was demolished in Bara Tehsil. It was located in Malikdeen khan area the name of the militant commander is Bakhtyar.

On 23 December, The political administration issued notices to Afghan families to vacate Sadokhelvillege after an oil tanker supplying fuel to Nato forces in Afghanistan was targeted in the same locality, local officials saidthat at least 20 Afghan families would be leaving the area soon. The administration also suspended three khasadar personnel posted at a checkpoint for negligence of duty. All the three had been sent to lockup at LandiKotal.

On 24 December, Militants attacked a police party when it was transporting an accused from Lokahri area to Shadi Khel check post in a private vehicle.The accused, Ajmal, who had been arrested under section 107 on a report registered by his rivals, was seriously injured while the vehicle was also badly damaged in the attack. The injured was shifted to KDA hospital. Local official said that the vehicle was attacked from the nearby mountain in Manda Khel LandiKotal.

On 25 December, A Frontier Corps trooper and two unidentified persons were killed when militants attacked the Bara Press Club in Khyber Agency that the paramilitary force was using as a security post, official sources and local’s said. They said more than a dozen militants launched the attack on the building around 4.30pm. FC trooper SabirKhattak and two unidentified attackers were killed in the exchange of fire that ensued. A third attacker was injured.

On 26 December, A peace activist and ex-commander of the militant group Lashkar-e-Islam were killed by militants in Nala area of Bara tehsil in Khyber Agency, the local sources said,
It was said that Khan Muhammad gave up militancy and was shifted to Peshawar following the launch of the military operation in Bara against the banned organization Lashkar-e-Islam.

Bajur Agency:

On 25 December, Forty-six militants surrendered to the government through a Jirga of local elders in Siddiqabad area of Bajaur Agency, official sources said. A Jirga of the tribal elders was held at Ghee Mills Siddiqabad area, six kilometers from Khar, and the headquarters of Bajaur Agency. The official sources said 46 militants, including four commanders from ShandiMor, Mandal, Loesam and Siddiqabad areas in Khar, surrendered.

On 26 December, A female suicide bomber ripped though a gathering of conflict-hit people waiting to receive food outside office of World Food Program in the Khar, headquarter of Bajuar Agency, killing at least 42 people, including women and children, and injuring scores of others, officials and locals said. TTP spokesman have accepted the responsibility of the attack.

Hangu:

On 26 December, Security forces thwarted a terrorist plot by seizing a car full of explosives in Doaba area, local police said. Acting on a tip off, a police party signaled to stop a suspected car for searching at Maroofi Banda. The outlaws, seeing security forces, abandoned the car and started firing in a bid to flee from the scene. During an exchange of fire with security forces, three outlaws, Abu Bakar, Anwar and SaeedGul, sustained injuries and were arrested.

Kohat:

On 22 December, A field officer of a private oil and gas company was kidnapped along with his driver from the Aloli area in Kohat. The official sources said that Fayyaz, a resident of SarkiPyala area of Hangu district, was on way to his village when unidentified persons kidnapped him along with his driver. Official sources said the kidnapped person was the employee of MOL, a private Hungarian oil and gas exploration company operating mainly in Karak district. Their car was recovered from the ChambaGul area in Kohat.

Peshawar:

On 21 December, All Fata Community Teachers Action Committee members, including Azmat Khan, Hayat Khan, Mohammad Sidiqque, Khanadan Khan and Abdul Malik, said that about 2,000 teachers had been rendered jobless due to closure of 950 schools.“Over 100,000 boys and girls students have been deprived of education with the closure of theseschools,the teachers said that the Peshawar High Court had already given a verdict in their favor by directing the government to appoint them in public sector schools, but the decision was not implemented.The Fata education directorate had issued termination orders of these teachers last month for not attending to their duties and still drawing salaries.They also demanded of the government to release their salaries withheld from the past six months.

On 23 December, At least 4 people received burn injuries when a gas pipeline exploded in a Central Police Office building in Peshawar. According to details, the explosion took place in a kitchen of the building. At least four people received burn injuries. The injured have shifted to city’s Lady Reading Hospital. Fire fighters have reached the spot.

On 24 December, An explosion occurred at a school in Peshawar.Two students and a teacher were wounded in the blast, the local sources said. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

On 25 December, Two students and a teacher sustained injuries when a bomb planted outside a private school went off at Palosai in the suburbs of Peshawar .The injured students were identified as Mohammad Ibrahim (19) and NaveedAkhtar (18) and their teacher Sajjad Ali (29). As a result of the blast, two rooms was destroyed completely and one partially, while windowpanes of the rest of rooms were also smashed. An official of the Bomb Disposal Unit told that 3-kg explosive was used in the blast. He said that it was a time device which had been packed in a plastic container. Teachers said that the school had received no threats from the militants, adding that it was a primary school where religious books were also taught to the students. It was the second school targeted by the militants in the area.

Charsadda:

On 21 December, The conference titled `Impact of Conflict on Girls Education` was arranged by AmnTehreek in Charsadda, which was attended by people from different walks of life.The speakers demanded immediate reconstruction of the destroyed schools in the province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and also asked for ensuring protection of other schools in the conflict areas.

SWAT:

On 22 December, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General AshfaqParvezKayani said that troops would stay in Swat till the elimination of militants from the region. He reiterated that the Army would continue contributing meaningfully towards the development and rehabilitation of the militancy-hit Swat district. The centre is run by the Pakistan Army for the rehabilitation of the affected youth by providing them psychological treatment, religious education and vocational training. A total of 46 youth were rehabilitated in the centre and handed over to their relatives.

Mardan:

On 24 December, A cleric and local leader of JamiatUlema-i-Islam-F was shot dead by two assailants inside a mosque in Ghalader area. Eyewitnesses said that the attackers opened fire on the cleric, PirAllama Shah Nazar, when he was sitting inside the mosque. The accused fled after the attack.The Sheikh Maltoon Town police station registered a murder case against the two accused, identified as Darya Khan and his son Ikram, and started investigation.
