YEMAYA’S BELLY

Play written by Quiara Alegría Hudes

Directed by Marisela Barrera

Dallas Premiere

Cara Mía Theatre Co.

Latino Cultural Center, 2600 Live Oak Street in downtown Dallas

A Cuban boy is born into a humble farming family, but after his first taste of cold Coca-Cola, he dreams of a world beyond his family's meager acre. Naively yearning to meet the "President of America," Yemaya’s Belly follows his epic journey into manhood and materialism, from farm to city, to a raft sailing to the New World. Directed by former Cara Mía Theatre Artistic Director, Marisela Barrera. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright of Water by the Spoonful and a collaborator with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the musical In The Heights, Quiara Alegría Hudes creates an unflinching view of Cuban life and the struggle to reach the United States of America through whimsy and brutal honesty.

4/22 Saturday

BATIEN AND BASTIENNE

Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora St. in downtown Dallas Arts District

Opera written by Amadeus Mozart

This charming, short, fully-staged comic opera by a very, very young Mozart centers on a lad and lassie with remarkably similar names, who fall in love but are separated – at least briefly – by worldly enticements. Led by guest conductor Paolo Bressan, this early work of the master, created when Mozart was just twelve years old, also features a wise magician with questionable skills.
