2)You are cordially invited to the Catalyze Commonwealth Summit Friday May 3rd, 8:30am - 5:30pm, at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ.
New Economy Northern Arizona University and the New Economics Institute (NENAU and NEI) will host a summit to catalyze building equitable, democratic, and sustainable forms of wealth in Flagstaff, the Southwest, and the U.S.
Please RVSP to by April 19th.
The core vision that animates this summit is that movements for the cooperative generation of wealth, sustainability, and democratic renewal must be joined. While these initiatives are too-often pursued separately we believe, that success in each arena requires that we simultaneously make progress in the others. Based on our experiences at NAU, in regional efforts such as Local FARE, and in conversations we are having in networks across the U.S., we believe that there are untapped transformative powers that we can unleash when we integrate these initiatives. Together, they draw different constituencies into important collaborations and allow us to form a visionary pragmatism that can address key challenges: How can we enlist the widespread initiative of diverse individuals and communities to advance new economic practices through which people, families, and communities can generate resilient and equitable wealth? How might we displace a mega-corporate economic system that undermines our democracy and instead build a system of cooperative enterprise that can support and re-energize the polity? How might we create economic institutions and practices that avert planetary ecological catastrophe?
This summit will host a collaborative conversation among national leaders in cooperative economics, democratic renewal, and sustainability networks, and people in our region and at NAU who are seeking to advance such initiatives to make real change in our communities. As such, the summit will provide a strategic opportunity to amplify and broaden the already vibrant conversation and work being done around these themes in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. We are also hopeful that the summit will help further catalyze a powerful movement on campuses and in communities across the nation.
The majority of the summit will consist of sessions and workshops that encourage sharing ideas, exploring partnerships, and building momentum. This summit is a part of an ongoing and long-term commitment to build cooperative approaches to enterprise development at local, regional, and national scales.
The Catalyzing Commonwealth summit will provide an opportunity to:

  1. Learn from experts on new economics and democratic renewal.
  2. Showcase the work we are doing in Northern Arizona
  3. Further draw together and connect the diverse networks mentioned above on three levels: locally (Arizona), regionally (Southwest), and nationally

Break-out sessions will include

  1. Building the local network in Northern Arizona: examine challenges, limitations, and possibilities in specific local context; bring together key stakeholders to discuss developing a long-term new economic initiative for cooperative enterprise.
  2. Envisioning and Building broader regional and national networks for civic engagement, cooperative economics, and sustainability: what can/should this look like?
  3. Developing civic education and research initiatives at NAU and in collaboration with organizations in Northern Arizona to enhance start-up capacities for cooperative enterprise; case study of local employee owned composting.

This summit is part of a nationwide series supported by NEI. See rest of summits hosted by the NEI Campus Network:
