ASSIGNMENTS / SELF-ASSESSMENT
(1)Week 3 Discussion:Online Class:After reading and reflecting upon Topics 3.1 through 3.3 and Topic 2.3, post your responses to Week 3 Discussion questions on this week's discussion board following the format outlined in Guidelines for Weekly Discussions (in Course Information). To summarize those requirements: You need to post at least three messages on the discussion board: (1) An INITIAL post that answers one of the questions and is thoughtful, well-reasoned, and substantive (about 100-150 words), (2) a FOLLOW-UP RESPONSE replying to someone else's post or responding to someone's comments about your initial post, and (3) a SUMMATION which gives your conclusions to the final summation question. Your summation should take into account responses to all the other questions. Be sure that you begin posting no later than Wednesday so that there is time for actual interaction with your classmates and instructor before the week ends. Put your comments in a message, not an attachment on the discussion board. Then copy and paste the summation you posted, including the heading (with name, date, etc.), into this Progress Report.
Onsite Class: After going over the material in Topics 3.1 through 2.3 in class, reflect upon Week 3 Discussion questions and be prepared to discuss them during the following class period. Include your preliminary conclusions (a tentative answer to the summation question) in this week's Progress Report. Your summation should take into account responses to all the other questions. / 0
(2) The People Speak: Read The People Speak on p, 42 of your text and write a paragraph explaining whether or not America still envisions itselfas a "city upon a hill" with a special mission or "calling." If so what is that mission? How is it like the Puritan mission and how is it different?Include your paragraph in this Progress Report. / 0
(3)Connection Between Primary Source and Theme: Continue doing research on your theme and your primary source essay and submit a more detailed explanation of how your primary source illuminates your theme. Locate pictures to use in your essay and presentation and include them in your report. / 0
(4) Begin Presentation: Include a paragraph on each of these aspects of your presentation in your Progress Report this week: (1)If you have never used presentation software before, experiment with Microsoft PowerPoint or StarOffice Impress. All you need to know how to do is apply a design to your presentation, insert text and pictures, and save your presentation. Indicate in your report the status of your proficiency with the software and any questions or concerns you may have about your presentation so that I can help you resolve them. (2) Think about the broader aspects of your theme (e.g., if your primary source essay is on some specificaspect of religion like the Puritans or the Quakers, your presentation should be on the general importance of religion to the colonists; if your primary source essay is on some specific aspect of slavery, your presentation should be on the general role of slavery in the growth of the colonies and you could include both Native American and African slavery). Explain what you want to include in your presentation. / 0
Note: If you are using Microsoft Word, you can update your score by right clicking on the total and selecting Update Field. I will need to update reports created in Star Office Writer. / AVERAGE SCORE: / 00.00
