Week 2 - 2018 NRL Referee’s High Performance Education Program.

Welcome to Week 2 of the Program.

We hope you enjoyed starting to think about you as a referee and how that might progress you along the pathway to officiating in the NRL.

Your SWOT analysis is not just a one-week snapshot. You should refer back and evolve it as your season and career progresses. As you adapt new experiences, your strengths and weaknesses will change as well as the threats and opportunities that come with different stages that you go through.

Feel free to continue to engage with your coaches and others you have identified on this analysis so you are getting the full benefit out of the process.

Below is the task that needs to be completed prior to session two on the 12th / 13th of June.

Session 2 sees the program move into technical officiating content with a discussion around the 4 Pillars taking place. This forms the basis of officiating practice and evaluation of the match you are refereeing.

You will have the presentation provided to you with detailed content on each pillar area. This will include relevant interpretations of the laws in each aspect, positioning of officials to determine the appropriate standard for the match and relevant vocab to assist in delivering the required standards.

Your task will be to go through the content (words and vision) and undertake the following:

1)Using your own words, make a summary of the key points in each of the pillar areas.

2)Formulate reasons why teams may seek to challenge in these particular areas of the game.

  1. For example – markers will split to stop dummy halves from getting to the advantage line and increasing the number of options defenders have to consider

One of our key messages in this program is that you need to begin to evaluate your officiating in a critical fashion.

This means not just ticking whether decisions are right or wrong. It is just as important to ask why teams play the way they do, how this impacts on the match, how this will impact you as the referee and what strategies can we implement to create a high performance in each game we officiate.

See you at the next session.
