Weather Data Tools

Write what each tool is used to measure or display.

Also: Put a star next to the three weather data tools that are used to measure conditions high in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Severe Weather

1.  Describe the conditions under which each storm is most likely to occur. Name the regions where these storms occur most frequently.

2.  Describe how each storm forms

3.  Describe a possible scene in the aftermath of a severe occurance of the storm.

4.  Describe what safety precautions to take when faced with this type of severe weather.

Conditions/Region / Formation / Aftermath / Safety
Hailstorm / Thunderstorm
Can occur most anywhere / Updrafts carry raindrops high in the clouds, where they freeze. They then fall through the cloud, coating the hail with a layer of water. The hailstone is then caught in another updraft and the new layer of water is frozen. This occurs until the hailstone is too heavy to be held up by the cloud. / Crops damaged, windows broken, windshields broken, animals injured. / Stay indoors, put cars and animals under shelter
Thunderstorm
(Include Lightning) / Can occur most anywhere
Warm, moist air and unstable atmosphere / Thunderstorm: Warm, moist air rises into an unstable atmosphere and forms a cumulonimbus cloud.
Lightning: Positive and negative charges are formed in cumulonimbus cloud. An electric charge occurs between opposite charges. / Flooding, trees down, power outages, fires started by lightning / Stay indoors
If stuck outside, stay away from trees and water
Unplug electrical devices
Tornado / Occurs most often in plains states; tornado alley
Forms from a thunderstorm / Winds traveling in opposite directions in a thunderstorm causes a portion of the cloud to begin spinning. / Damaged houses and vehicles
Power outages
Trees down / Go to basement or lowest floor of your home
Stay away from windows
Hurricane / Forms in Atlantic Ocean
Needs warm, moist air, warm ocean water and thunderstorms / Thunderstorms come together over war ocean water. Winds traveling in opposite directions cause the storm to begin to spin.
Warm, moist air over warm ocean water fuels a hurricaine. / Trees down, houses damaged, flooding, power outages / Evacuate for strong storms, otherwise, stay indoors, board up windows
