We pay a flat amount for employees on swing or grave shift. It's not by
hours worked. For instance, any employee assigned to swing shift gets $40
per pay period even if they're on vacation the entire time.

We will implement a shift differential, 7/1/2011 equal to3% of base pay. The differential will not be paid when accrued leave is used. The differential will be paid for all regularly assigned hours worked, other than overtime, between 2100 and 0700 the following day for swing shift and graveyard shift.
I hope the info is helpful.

We do not pay shift differential on vacation time. It is only paid for the actual hours worked on the unpopular shift. It is paid to the employee who worked during the unpopular shift to cover for the employee who is on vacation.

We have our own police department. We do not pay for night shift differential for our police officers. For our police dispatchers which are non-safety, they received graveyard shift differential which is a fixed dollar amount per month.

We calculate the shift differential on all the time as long as they are on that shift. So, yes, even for vacation time – they still are assigned to that shift whether they are there working or not.

If you accrue vacation on the shift differential, you wouldn’t need to pay during vacation taken, as it is in the employee’s bank already. If you do accrue vacation time on the shift differential, you could then pay out, and it would wash the account (40 hours regular, 40 hours shift differential accrued, then 40 hours regular pay, 40 hours shift differential taken).
We do not accrue on the shift differential. Neither do we pay vacation on the shift differential. Our shift differential is $0.25/hr and $0.50/hr for swing and grave respectively. So the employee is foregoing $10 in pay the week they are on vacation.
In our mind, the shift differential is bonus pay for HOURS PRESENT DURING THOSE TIMES, not bonus pay for being absent during swing and grave hours.
It shouldn’t be a hardship to not work those hours.
At least that is my thinking.

Hi Catrina – Why complicate your payroll system?! Shift Differential is pay for working unpopular shifts, but if they don’t work those shifts, regular pay applies.
Vacation is paid as regular pay since nothing was done to warrant the differential.
