Exciting and Competitive Afternoon for Driffield Swimmers
Driffield Junior Amateur Swimming Club hosted their first Borders Gala for 2017 along with swimmers from Pocklington, South Hunsley and Derwent Valley swimming clubs.
The younger swimmers aged nine & ten years swam races of 25 metres with the remaining age groups swimming 50 metre races.
The first win of the afternoon went to Nathan Cuthbert who swam in the open freestyle with a personal best time as well as swimming too fast! Krystian Jonski also earned himself a first place and personal best time and again too fast in the open butterfly race!
The afternoon continued in the same manner with numerous personal best times and first places from all age groups.
In the nine and ten years age group, there were personal bests with Tom Miles and Isobel Pape earning themselves PB’s in both of their races, Dan Kemp with his breaststroke, Sarah King with her freestyle and Holly Billam in her breaststroke. First places were achieved by Isobel and Dan also.
12 years and under also had their share of PB times with Sophie Ostler, Josh Hope, Erin Redfern and Olive Hakner and first place positions for Erin Redfern, Oliver Hakner and Josh Palmer with his competent freestyle.
Not to be outdone, wins were achieved in the 14 years and under swimmers with Megan Berry, Aimee Bowman, Henry Rodmell, Will Hakner and Connor Gardener (bearing in mind Connor was swimming up an age group!. Personal bests in this age group were accomplished by Megan Berry, Will Hakner, Keira Dinsdale-Young and Connor Gardener.
Taylor Cartwright, Alice Wakeley and Harris Bowman swam in the open age group with some of the other club’s swimmers being a few years older but still managed to gain themselves their best times. Alice also won her butterfly race with Harris winning his powerful backstroke race.
The relay races also had their fair share of accomplishments with a well earned first place position for the 12 and under boys medley of Oliver Hakner, Josh Hope, Morgan Cuthbert and Josh Palmer. The 14 years and under boys and girls medley races were won by Skye Bowman, Megan Berry, Keira Dinsdale-Young and Aimee Bowman and boys Connor Gardener, Will Hakner, Jack Lacy and Henry Rodmell. The freestyle relay team of Kezia Cartwright, Megan Berry, Aimee Bowman and Skye Bowman also earned a well deserved win.
Another win was achieved in the boys open medley relay with yet another first place with Harris Bowman, Elliot Moorfoot, Nathan Cuthbert and Jack Cowell.
The last race was a terrific one to watch of the boys open freestyle relay with Elliot Moorfoot, Krystian Jonski, Harris Bowman and Jack Cowell with fantastic swims from the boys as they were too fast!
An excellent gala to watch and all swimmers should be very proud of their achievements with so many first places, personal bests and the only club with no disqualifications apart from being too quick!
The results were in and all clubs were kept in suspense as no results had been announced during the gala – Driffield Junior Amateur Swimming Club earned a brilliant second place with 131 points, behind a winning Pocklington team with 146 points. South Hunsley were third with Derwent Valley fourth.
