29th Sunday in ordinary time
Is 45:1, 4-6/1 Thes 1:1-5b/Mt 22:15-21
“We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love, and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen.”… “I have called you by name, giving you a title, though you knew me not.”
As times change, so do our means of communication. Paul sent letters to his early Christian communities, to teach, encourage, correct and support them. Some were sent to individuals, others were intended to be read for the good of all. Gratitude was always expressed for fidelity to the gospel and support of his missionary endeavors. He never hesitated to offer praise when warranted, as well as to remind of their dignity having been chosen by the Lord.
The same reminder was offered earlier by Isaiah in the second book reminding us of the special choice God made, when He called us, even before our birth.
Today’s means of communication are different. Email, texting, or a greeting card, find us using abbreviations, other person’s words or images, without having to enter into a deeper relationship, as Paul did with his friends. Even a telephone call can limit us to the use of voice mail.
The biblical authors remind us we are made in God’s image, are truly special, called and chosen, and ask us to recognize those same traits and characteristics in others. We can affirm others, offer consolation in times of trouble, celebrate God’s goodness and remind them that they are loved by God.
Whom do you remember in your prayers and for whom do you offer thanks to God?

Dear Friends in the Lord:
Our Lord, before returing to his Father in Heaven, announces the gift of the Holy Spirit and charged his followers to be his witnesses “To the ends of the Earth.” (Acts 1:8)
We are all familiar with this fundamental duty as Catholics. Each year, we renew our baptismal call, especially during our Easter celebration. And, in October, as the entire Church celebrates World Mission Sunday, we have an opportunity to fufill this duty in a special way. Through prayer and sacrifice, we are able to support those missionaries who bring the teaching of Jesus to faraway places. In doing so, we are renewing our own vocation as misionaries.
Thankfully, there are many Catholic organizations that extend the treasures and talents of Americans to those parts of the world where people are struggling to find enough to eat or to send their children to school. However, the Church’s missionary activity begins with the proclamation of faith: “Jesus is Lord! He is our common hope- a hope that not only clothes and educates, but also saves. On World Mission Sunday, October 23, I invite you to “celebrate the hope that saves” through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, as well as by giving generously to the World Mission Sunday Collection.
Your vital contribution to the Pontifical Mission Societies will support those 1,150 young mission (arch) dioceses and communities awaiting the “Good News” of Jesus as their saving hope. As we pray and respond here in the United States, we join with every parish and chapel around the world to renew ourselves and our Church.
May God bless you and our archdiocese.
With prayerful best wishes, I am,
Faithfully in Christ,
Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan
Archbishop of New York
