We don’t often hear about soul ties and their impact on our lives. This is unfortunate since soul ties are at the heart of many of the emotional and spiritual problems that we face on a daily basis.

As the phrase implies, a soul tie is a tie, bond or attachment to someone. We become tied to someone through an emotion or behavior such as bitterness, fear, unforgiveness, shame, control, manipulation or abuse. If you feel any of these or other unhealthy emotions toward someone, you most likely have a soul tie. A soul tie can also be created when two people have a sexual relationship outside of the covering of marriage.

Soul ties keep us bound to that person, leading him or her to have an influence over our thoughts, our behaviors and how we see ourselves. As a result, we lose our sense of identity, our purpose in life and our ability to trust and connect with God and others.

David Cross of Ellel Ministries says: When we realize that relationships are more than just a physical meeting of two people, we begin to understand that some of our relationships might have affected our lives in a negative way. We may find ourselves tied and damaged, in a place of bondage from which God wants us to be set free…It is a tie in the spiritual realm that has a hold on the soul.

Even some of our good relationships can have elements of ungodliness in them. You can have a soul tie with a relative, a friend, a co-worker, a pastor- anyone with whom you have a direct relationship. You can even be attached to someone you haven’t seen or talked to in years. Some of the indicators of an ungodly soul tie are: anger, fear, bitterness or resentment toward someone; unhealthy dependency upon a person; obsessive thoughts about a person or painful memories of someone. Soul ties can also develop if you have been abused (sexually, physically or verbally) or if you feel intimidated, controlled or manipulated by someone.

Thankfully, we do not have to go through life tied to someone else! Inner-healing prayer helps us identify the soul ties in our lives. Through the power and authority of Jesus Christ, we can break these soul ties, so that we can experience the life that God intended for us.
