- CURE Scholars Program will be present to talk about their program
- Speaker: Dr. Brett Hassel
- Description: Middle school STEM outreach in W. Baltimore that is a combined activity for professional schools in UMB - - science pipeline for underrepresented minority students to expose to healthcare careers and opportunities; part of a pipeline of programs (entry level) with and without minority focus; funding components housed at UMB so can make connections with different educational levels (pairing with HBCUs and high schools in the area)
- NCI developed this program in 1991, goal to enhance representation in biomedical sciences; focus on W. Baltimore and greater Baltimore community; want to prevent educational decline that occurs in transition between elementary and middle school; use cohorts that reflect W. Baltimore communities
- Mentoring: 5 to 1 ratio, UMB Cure Programs Mentor Matching kicked off next week; Tuesday and Thursday (1 hour sessions) as well as Saturdays (works with A Bridge to Academic Excellence with teambuilding activities); emphasize holistic approach by bringing strength of all professional schools and impacting many life aspects that are challenges to these students with home visits; mentors are accepted year round!!

- Insurance updates - read the article in the Grad Gazette going out this week! Article will have contact information for questions about healthcare.
- Enrollment numbers: 1570; 1.5% cheaper to students based on the premium rate alone (not including copays or out of pocket expenses)
- Want to look into handling of these cases by student accounting, if you have a description of an event please email president with specific complaints
- Need to establish presence of students that are disgruntled with healthcare change, because student concern is being swept aside and administration assumes this was a smooth transition
- Bike Share: 50 plus stations, have electric powered bikes,
- Our station will start late October, early November
- Concern for bike safety has not been addressed

- Social Activities Committee: Fall social is in the planning stages
- USGA Announcements
- Pigtown Festival October 8th 12-7pm, USGA is sponsoring a pig in the pig races, students will get a $5 discount on unlimited beverage wristband (normally $25) OR $5 towards first drink OR $5 towards merchandise
- Fall Formal Friday November 12th at the Baltimore Museum of Industry

- Travel Awards due October 15th, 2016; submission has changed from physical to email; please do not sign without all parts of the application being signed
- Budget 2015-2016 was increased by $3000 and was to go to summer socials, crab feast, and service opportunities; found additional funding for candidacy ceremony and other events, which resulted in coming in significantly under budget; would like to add $3000 back to the research awards to increase awards from 2 to 4 awards; as well as addition of professional development award (add $1000 from the extra funds)

- GRC: The first committee meeting will be held after the November GSA meeting on 11/02/16. This meeting will outline the tasks that need to be completed before the GRC. If this meeting time does not work for you, please contact .

- U of M grad council: No meeting until tomorrow (October 6th)
- Professional Development Committee
- Purpose: for student funding when they are not presenting for a conference, but are going to conferences or training that aids graduate career
- Maximum award is $250; Due date October 15 (April through September) and April 15 (October through March)
- Fall due date will be November 1st
- Applicants will submit CVs as well as a statement as to the purpose of the event and how it will affect career short term and long term (this will be emphasis when scoring)
- Will also take into account quality of the event attended
- Will be submitted to Morgan Bunting and the Professional Development Committee;
- Scoring criteria: attendance at GSA meetings for Programs, number of professional development opportunities attended this year, overall impression (statements; purpose and reflection of the event)
- Questions as to changing budget and maximum for the award; so would like to switch for this round a range from $250 to 500 per award
- FALL DEADLINE IS NOW NOVEMBER 1st

- Announcements: Grad Gazette has had problems with communication at the school, so it should be coming out this Friday
- Communications Committee: Please sign up for this committee!!! No members as of this date.

- New E-board (L. Sebanjo is the president for the upcoming year)
- Event upcoming in December
- NOVA: Neuroscience Outreach and Volunteer Association
- Many students are excited and signed up for the upcoming year to promote events for students to learn about biomedical sciences (promote science and learning about the brain); have been asked to partner with UMB Cures previously
- Planning to cut back on events to devote more time and energy
- Any students are welcome to attend and help, just email A. Labuza to get on the email list if you would like to participate
- Bingo will be next month (on Tuesday nights, for now planning the 18th or 25th) and want to get Fall Tours started (but no one will volunteer to chair, so if you are interested in this role please contact A. Labuza)

- Funding requests: for group requests: $750.00 for this fall semester
- NOVA (supported group): requests $210.00 for Spring Grove Hospital money for snacks for participants (20-30 patients attend); funding also for food at meetings, and several miscellaneous items to maintain NOVA function through the semester (scissors, tape, etc). Another Port Discovery event will be upcoming that requires small items (batteries for demos, etc.).

- SNAC (Scientists for Non Academic Careers)/ Umbrella group for EIN, UMCC, Science Policy, and Intellectual Property, etc.: Requesting $466.00 for food at events - - Snacks with SNAC as a lab break for networking with students, open meeting/SNAC social and case materials; Upcoming events will include lunch and learns about different umbrella groups and a meeting for the start of the Science Policy group; events are open for all students (attended 80% by graduate students, but also have post doc attendance); many events are paired with Jenn Aumiller - - umbrella groups are pursuing funding from other sources
