RochesterPublic Schools, SEAC Meeting January 22, 2009

In Attendance: Becky Fluegel, Sue Palmer, Mary Bennett, KaseyJohanson, Kristen Stier, Laurie Laudon, MakaBoeve, Kathy Barnes, Cami Olson, Denise Smith, Michelle Verna, Jess Reddinger, Tammy Bonnickson, Cory McIntyre, John Riebow, Bob Kostner, Angela Heinrich.

Excused Absences: Vesna Sloan

Welcome: The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:30 pm by chair Becky Fluegel. The following points were reviewed:)

-Introductions were made of all members present

-Requested that anyone who has a comment form from last meeting should hand those in to either Becky or Sue.

-Agenda for next meeting to include discussion on the ongoing budget issues and MN rule revisions.

Approval of Minutes: Becky Fluegel made a motion to approve the minutes from last meeting. Mary Bennett seconded, and the minutes were approved.

Announcements and Community Updates:

-IEP 101 outreach group along with ARC will host an IEP 101 seminar either February 17th or 26th from 6:30 to 8:30. Space is limited and it will cost $15.00 per person or $25.00 per family. This includes a packet and DVD to take home.

-Corey McIntyre announced that several public input budget meetings for the district have been scheduled and on February 10th, the school board will vote and make final budget decisions.

-Becky Fluegel announced that she will organize and schedule a SEAC input meeting regarding the budget.

-Corey McIntyre announced that this year will include state monitoring with review of special education student files. They will make proposals for corrections to improve policies district wide.

-Becky Fluegel encouraged those interested in the handbook sub-committee to continue to meet and explore new ideas.

Information Session: Panel of several school professionals answered five questions. Panel included the following: Nicole Mueller, Kathy Barnes, Cami Olson, Troy Prigge, Denise Smith. The following five questions were asked of the panel members:

  1. What does a typical school day look like for you?
  2. What are some of the primary areas of concerns heard from families?
  3. In regard to the IEP, How do you carry out your job and what changes would you make?
  4. What areas do you feel least supported?
  5. How can SEAC support you and the work that you do?

Several SEAC members made additional comments and asked a variety of additional questions.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
