Waterwatch Coordinator’s Report May/June 2016

In General

This report covers the period 20 April to 21 June.

The last 2 months have been focused on assisting groups with completing autumn macroinvertebrate surveys and chasing up missing data in preparation for the Autumn Catchment Update, to be published in the next week or so.

Office

This period the coordinator assisted with general supplies and up keep of the catchment group office.

  • Hosted SACTCG Radio Landcare show for June. (21/6)

Waterwatch

This period the coordinator;

  • Assisted Sands Waterwatch team with macroinvertebrate surveys at their site (19/4).
  • Met with Rehabilitation Australia to discuss client’s involvement in our Waterwatch program.(21/4)
  • Delivered 2 training sessions with Zac, Rehabilitation Australia’s client from above.(28/4 & 11/5)
  • Facilitated 2 X site visits by new Waterwatch team to monitor headwaters of Tuggeranong Ck.(3/5 & 2/6)
  • Delivered QA/QC resources to Dan Starrs,(UMWW Scientific Officer).(4/5)
  • Attended the WW Coordinators meetings for May and June. (10/5 & 14/6)
  • Participated in delivery of UMWW QA/QC event for May. (15/5)
  • Provided follow up training session to new ‘Bidgee blue’ Waterwatch team. (2/6)
  • Conducted QA/QC assessment of ‘Sands’ Waterwatch team. (3/6)
  • Met with Dan and Woo to finalise reaches to be included in the 2015/16 CHIP report. (8/6)
  • Provided equipment support to a number of member groups. Including after-hours monitoring of SPOT beacon.

Education

This period the coordinator;

  • Delivered Waterwatch education session and field trip for Chisholm HS Yr7 ‘Ignite program’ students (28/4).
  • Met members of Canberra University’s Environmental Science Society to plan their macroinvertebrate surveying. (29/4)
  • Delivered Waterwatch follow up training to Lions Youth Haven education officer and students from Calwell HS (5/5).
  • Facilitated 2 X site visits by Chisholm HS Yr10 ‘Ignite Students’ to Upper Stranger pond and Isabella pond for potential Waterwatch monitoring project. (5/5 & 2/6)
  • Delivered Waterwatch lesson to Lake Tuggeranong College Ecology class. (9/5)
  • Provided WW school kit for Trinity Christian College. (10/5)
  • Provided display materials for Chisholm HS open night. (13/5)
  • Delivered 2 X macroinvertebrate survey lessons with Chisholm HS Yr7 (23 & 25/5)

Weeds Equipment

This period the coordinator;

  • Delivered backpack spray unit training to the Green Army team. (2/5)
  • Met with SACTCG exec’s re; Regional Investment Strategy (R.I.S) targets. (3/5)
  • Attended meeting with NRM officials regarding our R.I.S targets. (4/5)
  • Attended training on the use of the new ‘Collector’ mapping app. (9/5)
  • Took phot points at Scottsdale NSW for R.I.S reporting.(20/5)
  • Assisted Fiona with RARC survey of revegetation project site at Castle Hill HS. (3/6)
  • Delivered and collected 2 of our back packs from the repairers.
  • Managed the booking of the spray trailer by land owners.

Urban Landcare

This period the coordinator;

  • Hosted the June meeting of the ‘Carers of Point Hut Pond’ group. (17/6)

Icon Water project

This period the coordinator;

  • Returned all the resources that had been left here years ago that belonged to Icon Water.

  • Co-hosted public consultation meeting for the draft ‘ACT & Region Catchment Strategy’ as representative of UMCCC.
  • Attended UMCCC general meeting and delivered treasurer’s report. (11/5).
  • Attended workshop on the ‘Basin Priority Project’s’ delivery of community information sessions around the shortlisted works for phase 2. (27/5)
  • Attended draft ‘Volunteer Statement’ Consultation meeting by Volunteering ACT and Act Gov. (6/6)
