Washington University (WU) Employee Tuition Assistance

100% of part-time, evening program undergraduate tuition costs and 50% of part-time evening program graduate tuition costs for courses offered through the University up to seven (7) credit hours per semester. Employees regularly working during the day are eligible to enroll in courses offered through the evening programs and employees regularly working in the evening/night shift are eligible to enroll in courses offered through the day programs.

School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS)Tuition Assistance (Effective Jan. 1, 2016)

For graduate level courses that are offered through SEAS Sever Institute’s Professional Education Programs, SEAS will pay the remaining 50% of tuitionfor eligible SEAS employees, upon approval of the University’s benefit plan paying the first 50%.

To be eligible for the SEAS graduate tuition benefit, the employee must:

  1. Be an eligible employee in SEAS.
  2. Meet and maintain all of the University’seligibility requirements to receive graduate tuition benefits.
  3. Achieve expectations in their current position as supported by the most recent performance review and/or a written letter of support from the direct supervisor or Department Chair.

If an employee fails to complete the course in which he/she enrolled and does not have a passing grade posted for such course within 60 days after the end of the semester, the employee will no longer be considered an Eligible Employee for the tuition benefit, will be obligated to repay the benefit to the University and to SEAS, and will be solely responsible for any applicable penalties and fees. The repayment obligation may be waived, at the sole discretion of the University Plan Administrator and the SEASDean or Department Chair (as applicable), if the employee fails to complete a course for medical reasons that prevent the employee from attending classes. Such waivers will be rare.

In the event of any ambiguity or overlooked issuesin the SEAS policy, the WU policy will govern.

To request the WU and SEAS benefit, the Eligible Employee must:

  • Submit a copy of all University required form(s).
  • Submit a copy of your most recent performance evaluation and/or letter of support from your direct supervisor or Department Chair.

Please submit the request and supporting documents to the SEAS HR & Payroll Manager no later than 2 weeks prior to the first day of class for the semester.

Once approved by SEAS, please submit tuition assistance request forms to the University prior to the first day of class for the semester. Employees must complete one continuous year of full-time service prior to utilizing the benefit. Submit your original form to Tuition Assistance, CB 1190. Copies will not be accepted.

The benefit covers tuition only. You are responsible for any books, fee and other costs.

A passing grade of D or better is required. In addition, employees must complete the course and have a passing grade posted w/in 60 days after the end of the semester or the benefit will be removed from your student account.

If you drop a class after the beginning of the semester you are financially responsible for any fees in accordance with the policy of the WU school in which you are enrolled and the tuition benefit will be removed from your student account.

Eligible courses are those offered through part-time evening programs and must begin at 4pm or later. See the plan document for more details. Please note: No benefit is available for courses such as Applied Music, which is structured as one-on-one music lessons between the instructor and student.

Courses taken for audit are not covered by the benefit.

The benefit will cover tuition assistance for up to 7 credit hours per semester. The benefit is tax free except where noted.

When utilizing the benefit, keep in mind you are enrolled as a student of a WU school and are required to follow the policies of that school.
